How to save feed in layers during this hard time???
Currently we are in a time where the egg prices are going down and the feed prices for birds are going up.
Many farmers are resorting to reducing the amounts of feed given to birds to as low as 40g per mature bird per day in mature laying flocks since they feel they are spending alot on feed compared to what they gain because of the Corona situation. So they are finding a way to just maintaining the birds and willing to resume production later something that is not right .
When birds are starved to this extent ,the following will happen :
🐣They can lose as much as 30g to 50g or more per day body weight .
🐣The production will go down to almost zero.
🐣Reduced egg size
🐣The immunity will become very low making them prone to infection.
🐣Reduced feed intake even when feed is provided if it persists for long dur to disrupted digestive system.
🐣Loose stool due to imbalance between water intake and feed intake and many other problems.
What a farmer must know is that the problems caused will not go immediately once the situations get better. For example the birds will need alot of time to get back their weights between 1.6kg to 2.1kg,stabilise their body and health before restarting to lay .This will require serious supplementation and heavy feeding to bring the situation to normal.Remember weight gain is harder to achieve than weight loss in birds .
You will experience alot of small eggs ,abnormal eggs ,low productions and many other egg abnormalities plus diseases due to essential nutrients lack on bodies of the birds .
What is the farmer supposed to do ??
Improve the effectiveness of the feed given to birds by observing the following :
🐣Make sure your birds do not have parasites like worms ,mites ,fleas and coccidiosis which will reduce on the utilisation of the nutrients .
🐣Make sure there is no feed wastage at all by doing the following :
1.Make sure the serving is done with care to prevent feed spillage.
2.The feeders must be at a good height so that birds do not bend to reach the feed but allowing birds to access the space below the feeder.
3.Make sure the feed served is of good quality in terms of ingredients in that the little fed has what the birds need.
4.Make sure the mixing is done perfectly well to have a balanced portion .
5.Have enough equipments in terms of feeders and drinkers to avoid imbalanced feed intake in terms of quality and quantity.
Improve the shelf life of the eggs by doing the following :
🐣Reduce the time eggs spend in the delaying nests by timely collection.
🐣 Right placement of the egg on the tray where the broader part with the air space must be up and the narrow part down .
🐣Do not allow your eggs to get in touch with any moisture eg do not clean eggs with wet cloth and do not wash them .
🐣Separate damaged eggs from the rest .
🐣Keep in a well ventilated store and keep trays off the ground by use of spaced pallets .
With those you can be able to keep your eggs for a longer time as you weight the for the situation to get better but also monitor the prices closely so that you offload some of the eggs in order to sustain the feeding of the birds but always start with the eggs that entered the store first .
In case you have run out of options and the only option is to reduce the feed intake .the following must be followed .
🐣The reduction must be gradual not abrupt to avoid stress which might lower immunity affecting production and predisposing birds to infections.
🐣Do not go below 90g to 100g per bird per day but of quality feed .
🐣Balance the water:feed intake ratio to make sure birds drink twice as much water they take in millilitres compared to feed taken in grams.
Eg 100g of feed vs 200mls of water to avoid lose stool which comes with alot of minerals and other nutrients .
🐣Weigh your birds weekly to monitor the extent of damage to adjust accordingly.
🐣Avoid giving any mouldy feed since it will cause serious problems due to aflatoxins.
🐣Avoid change of feeding routine eg serving feed once from the normal two times .Maintain the routine just with reduced amounts .
