Marble can be obtained in several colors but the most commonly used color for monuments and headstones has traditionally been white, or shade of gray. Primarily this is due to the much higher costs of rarer, colored marble.

Some people choose marble for tombs, headstones, and statues because of the unique swirling patterns and embedded shadings that can make for a very unique appearance.

When used indoors, for example inside a crypt or mausoleum, marble can make for a very long-lasting and beautiful design. If you are looking specifically for a bright white colored memorial, marble may be the best option for you as granite does not naturally occur in a pure white color.

Generally, when a person dies in this tradition, a pig is immediately butchered to honor the spirit of the dead and the meat of the butchered animal will be distributed to the visitors or neighbors except for the relatives as they are forbidden to eat the said meat.

When a dead person is an old man or woman, bigger livestock such as carabao or cow is butchered for the community to share and as usual, the relatives are not allowed to partake of the meat.

A wake for the dead takes only two nights or three days. After the burial of the dead body, another set of animals that need to be butchered and distributed to immediate family, relatives or visitors. An exception to this practice, there is no butchering of any animals if the death comes from the hands of an enemy. In addition, the wake period is only for one day and one night.

The Bontoc death rite is heavily class-laden and there are three classes in this tradition; The Kachangyanโ€”members of the community who usually posses a great number of material wealth(Usually the first born Male or Female), the Ketnaโ€”A person who was born Kachangyan but has less property at the time of death, and the Lawaโ€”the poor.
Upon death, the female Kachangyan is dressed up with the white lamma blouse and fitay in ultramarine blue, finely woven and embellished in Xs and diamond forms representing rice mortar and palay grains respectively. On the day of the burial, a head covering called the safkungโ€”usually of the same material as the lamma; is laid in place. The male Kachangyan has to wear white wakes or loin clothes tightly woven in in the langteb or diamond design. A dead Kachangyan has to have 3 blankets; the fanchala, the pinagpagan and the fiyaong but most importantly the finangurawan for the male and the Lewes for the femaleโ€”These are black cotton clothes loosely woven like gauze

The Ketnaโ€”usually the second or third or cousins of the Kachangyan has to be dressed up with the prescribed attire of the Kachangyan. For a female, their attire is a white lamma or blouse of coarse yarn and loose weave known as kineter. The kain or dark blue wrap skirt is also woven in kineter and embellished with 7 diamondsโ€”one less to that of a Kachangyan. For the male, the loin cloths are done in plain weave and has ten sets of ridge lines on the rear flap. There are 2 blankets for the Ketna.

For the Lawa, the female blouse is a white lamma in the coarsest and thinnest weave called faw-faw and is strictly plain and devoid of embellishments. The kain for the Lawa is a three-panelled black cloth with a narrow white stripe at each central length of the panels. For the male Lawa, the white loin cloth is done in faw-faw with five and six sets of ridge lines on the front and rear flaps of the loin cloth respectively.

The most important part of a Bontoc death rite is the pot-pototโ€”a tradition the involves apportioning of blankets into one part for the descendants and another for the deceased. This rite ensures a smooth and swift passage of the spirit of the deceased from the mortal world to the world of the spirits. All social ranks perform this rite and it is only usually skipped if the deceased was young or unmarried.

Funeral traditions around the world:

The Benguet people from the island of Luzon in Philippines clean up the deceased's body and a few of the men are dispatched to collect bamboo, which they then fashion into a chair โ€“ and this is where the body is seated.

Once secured in place with more bamboo and strips of cloth, the body is blindfolded so that the deceased does not have to bear witness to the suffering in the world.

A fire is lit to fend off insects and act as a beacon should the deceasedโ€™s spirit wander and be unable to find its way home.

In this ritual that lasts for eight days, elders give a chanted, oral biography of the deceased a night before the funeral and as the body is buried, mourners hit bamboo sticks together in the belief it will help the departed find their way to heaven.

Burial Rituals around the world:

Famidihana, or 'the turning of the bones', is a ritual practiced by the Malagasy people in Madagascar.

In this sacred ritual, which occurs every five to seven years, a number of deceased relatives are removed from an ancestral crypt. Living family members carefully peel the burial garments off the corpses and wrap them in fresh silk shrouds.

The process of Famidihana starts when an ancestral spirit appears to a senior family member.

A traditional astrologer, known as an Ombiasy then consults the zodiac to determine the day to open and close the tomb with guests and relatives traveling for miles to attend the two day celebration, usually bringing a donation in the form of money or alcohol.

The festivities begin and guests drink, converse, and dance with their forebears.

The celebration ends before nightfall as the Merina tribe fears the negative energy and evil power the night brings.

The bodies are then reburied alongside gifts of money and alcohol and placed upside down to close the cycle of life and death.

Epitaph from history: THE GRAVE OF THE POET
WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE 1564 - 1616

'Good friend for Jesus sake forbeare,
To dig the dust enclosed here.
Blessed be the man that spares these stones,
And cursed be he that moves my bones.'

1) "Less is more" - epitaphs are usually short and concise. They are a chance to sum up a person's life in just a few words, to give it shape and express real emotion.

2) Epitaphs often convey a strong feeling. However, the best epitaphs are timeless and not overly sentimental, and for this reason, I always advise waiting at least a year before choosing so that emotions have time to settle and you don't later regret your choice.

3) Often, someone is speaking in the first person (a relative, a friend; the deceased). You might want to think about whose voice you want this to be.

4) Consider whether you want the epitaphs to speak directly to someone. This may be a passerby or the loved one themselves.

5) Take inspiration from scripture, literature, lyrics and poems. You might even use a few words from a poem or eulogy which was read at the funeral.
