The job of the Speech Language Pathologist is SO often misunderstood, and usually because most people think we only work on initially learning to talk or making the correct sounds. When In reality, we work on so much more! The biggest obstacle for me is parents and teachers not understanding that kids might need to work on language skills- even when they are talking! There’s so much more to language than knowing and saying words! What about you, which do you find yourself explaining to others?

Denial. This is something that I have wanted to talk about here for such a long time because it is SO COMMON- but also a really tough topic to talk about. Short term denial can be helpful to process emotions, but long term it can have a really negative impact. Denial prevents us from seeing things that are often times clear to others. And what’s important for parents and professionals to know is - it’s not a conscious decision. In fact, I believe denial is so strong that I have wondered if I could be in denial about my child- and I’ve asked other professionals for their opinions in case I missed something. I know it’s very possible I can see some of his weaknesses while ignoring others. I know parents see their children in a different light than others and we are often just so blind when it comes to them. In my line of work, I definitely encounter many parents who are in denial. It could be full on denial or it could be just blind to one particular need/diagnosis. It doesn’t mean they are a bad parent, and I think this is something we as professionals need to keep in mind. Professionals may have to repeat themselves many times before what they are saying is heard and processed. That’s ok. Parents may need to hear it from several people before they can process it. That’s also ok. So to my fellow SLPs/professionals- please keep sharing your opinions with parents, even if they aren’t ready to hear it- it just might click the next time. And to my parents, please consider what the professional is saying. Please know that denial is STRONG- it’s a very real possibility. If a therapist recommends further evaluation, please give it a shot. If your child gets a diagnosis you don’t agree with, get a second opinion. Sometimes parents are right and what others viewed as denial is not the case. Getting an assessment or second opinion can help clear the air and will give SO MUCH INFORMATION about the child.
I would love for parents to see just how common denial is, so if you are a parent and willing to share your story or just a comment of “me”, please do so in the comments 👇🏼👇🏼

Most kids gesture before they talk. For example, they: point at things they want parents to look at; shake their heads to say “no”; and tilt their hands to their mouth to tell us they …

So many skills develop prior to verbal speech, and I think this is something non-SLPs just don’t realize- or think about! Think of language development as a house- first you start with the foundation- then walls- then roof- and last the decor!

Note- I do not encourage forcing eye contact in those who are uncomfortable. Many people have said making eye contact is physically painful, and others have said they cannot focus on what someone is saying if they are looking at their eyes. Definitely something to keep in mind if you are a parent, teacher, or therapist!

I am often asked what a child’s first words are, and my answer is always, “whatever is important to them”! So if your child loooooooves paper, I would expect paper to be a first word. Same for favorite people or pets! But, here’s a list of common first words to give you an idea of what words you should be modeling in play- or learning to sign!
➡️ What was your child’s first word/s?
