Cholesterol appears to stimulate the growth of human breast cancer cells, as cancer feeds on cholesterol. The cancer is thought to be using the cholesterol to make estrogen or to shore up tumor membranes to help the cancer migrate and invade more tissue. In other words, breast tumors may take advantage of high circulating cholesterol levels to fuel and accelerate their own growth.

Though data have been mixed, the largest study to date found a 17 percent increased risk in women who had cholesterol over 240, compared to those whose cholesterol was under 160—though they cannot rule out that something else in cholesterol-raising foods may be raising breast cancer risk.

To drastically lower our LDL cholesterol level, we need to drastically reduce our intake of trans fat (found in processed foods and naturally in meat and dairy), saturated fat (found mainly in animal products and junk foods), and dietary cholesterol (found exclusively in animal products, especially eggs).

Consuming less meat and more fruits, vegetables, and fiber, as well as flaxseeds, soy foods, and cruciferous vegetables, may reduce breast cancer risk and improve survival chances.
