Sometimes, in "popular psychology", we have these cliches that sound really nice, but aren't necessarily true or backed by science.

Yes, loving yourself is important, but somehow, we seem to think we can do that in isolation. Attachment research is so clear: we are created for connection and it is so deeply embedded into us that it is a part of our survival.

I think we like the idea of self-love because it is easier not to need other people, not to depend on others. Our fear of being rejected and disappointment doesn't get triggered when we think of ourselves in isolation from others.

As hard as it is to hear, your connection with others is one of the most important aspects to your growth and development. It is through connection that we see ourselves more clearly, understand our value and feel secure. Yes, this means doing the difficult work not just on yourself, but with other people, having the hard conversations, showing up, being seen and being vulnerable.
