This year's Hydrocephalus and Spina Bifida Day celebrations at Mulago Hospital, spearheaded by it's Neurosurgery Department,headed by Consultant Neurosurgeon Dr.Joel Kiryabwire,who is also the Past President Neurosurgical Society of Uganda, were held at the Mulago Hospital Complex Grounds. In attendance were department team that directly manages the hydrocephalus and Spina Bifida patients that included Dr.Senyonga Peter,Paediatric Neurosurgeon,Dr.Obiga Oscar,Skull base Neurosurgeon, Dr.Nalwanga Juliet, Paediatric Neurosurgeon and the Neurosurgery Residents . The events were graced by the Executive Director,Mulago Hospital. The main celebrants,our dear patients ,came in good numbers and were attended to in the Friday Paediatric Neurosurgery Clinic, that was stationed at the celebration point. This clinic ordinarily runs on Fridays at Level 5,Block G,Mulago Hospital Complex.
Testimonies by survivors were heard and it was a moment to celebrate the journeys of our patients and appreciate the milestones attained by the department. It was noted through various speakers that indeed there has been tremendous progress in management of Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus in Uganda primarily due to the modern technology and newer management techniques like ETV and CPC; and improved diagnostics like MRI and CT scan..which are presently available in Mulago Hospital. Focus was also made on the need for society to overwhelmingly support our Hydrocephalus and Spina Bifida patients who oftentimes suffer depression as a result of discrimination and stigma in society.
The days celebrations were an opportunity to Connect, Celebrate, and Amplify some of the many voices, stories, and abilities across the Uganda Community of Spina Bifida & Hydrocephalus. Happy Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus day.
