A child’s first book can open a world of imagination, confidence, and opportunity—but for many children in rural Uganda, that first book never comes. According to UNICEF, Uganda continues to face high rates of learning poverty, meaning a large percentage of children are unable to read and understand a simple text by age 10.
This challenge is worsened by limited access to reading materials, overcrowded classrooms, and a shortage of teachers. UNESCO’s 2024 Education Country Brief highlights that Uganda’s education system struggles with insufficient learning resources, which directly affects literacy outcomes and long‑term educational attainment.
PLATFORM for the NEEDY (PLANE) Uganda’s programs are working to close this gap by providing reading materials and safe learning spaces where children can learn. As their reading skills grow, so does their self‑esteem.
Every child who learns to read gains a tool that can shape their entire future. But without books, that future remains out of reach.
