"UMA" is one of the first Tongan words we taught our boys. Informally, it's a "kiss".
You can hear it.
"Uma, Uma Uma" lips pursed chasing them down. Squishing those perfect little cheeks. Smiles, squealing, pure sweetness and love.
It's a feeling as much as it is an action. It's a moment of connection to each other as much as it is a connection of my boys to their culture.
So when I thought about what I wanted to change our clinic name to as we grew I couldn't get the idea of UMA out of my head.
More formally an Uma is a "sacred pause" or greeting when you go cheek to cheek with a loved one or acquaintance and take a shared breath together in that moment.
Love, connection, healing, holding. This is Uma
