At Heritage Births, the average total time that a client will spend face-to-face with us before birth, for the same visits described below is.......615 minutes or 10 hours and 15 minutes. This doesn't include all the phone calls, emails and text communications throughout pregnancy, our being with you the entire time you're in labor at the birth center and immediately postpartum, or the many postpartum visits and calls for 6 weeks after birth. What type of care do YOU want?

The first 6 weeks after birth are the most difficult, and why it’s important to surround yourself with a supportive provider and family….and encapsulate your placenta to help with the hormone withdrawals 😉. Feel free to reach out if you’d like me to encapsulate your placenta for you!

Every new mom could certainly use a village, but having a partner that understands the drastic hormonal changes the new mom will experience is also extremely beneficial and an absolute necessity. The drastic drop in hormones after childbirth significantly affects a woman’s mental and physical health by influencing mood-regulating brain chemicals, stress responses, immune function, and various bodily systems.

▶️Mental Health Effects

📑“Baby Blues”: This common, short-term condition affects up to 80% of new mothers and involves mood swings, tearfulness, anxiety, and irritability, typically resolving within two weeks.
📑Postpartum Depression (PPD): When symptoms are more severe and last longer than two weeks, it may be PPD. Symptoms can include persistent sadness, extreme fatigue, difficulty bonding with the baby, feelings of worthlessness or guilt, and in severe cases, thoughts of self-harm or harming the baby.
📑Postpartum Anxiety and OCD: Hormonal shifts can also lead to or worsen generalized anxiety, panic attacks, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), which involves intrusive thoughts and compulsive behaviors.
📑Postpartum Psychosis: A rare but very severe psychiatric emergency that typically involves hallucinations, delusions, and severe confusion, requiring immediate medical attention.

▶️Physical Health:

📑Thyroid Function: The body is more susceptible to thyroid dysfunction in the first year postpartum. About 1 in 20 women may develop postpartum thyroiditis (inflammation of the thyroid), which can cause fatigue, weight changes, and mood disturbances that mimic or worsen depressive symptoms.
📑Immune System: Hormonal changes trigger immune system reactivation after delivery, which can exacerbate dormant autoimmune conditions or trigger new ones.
📑Physical Recovery and Sleep: The body is also recovering from the physical aspects of childbirth, and the hormonal fluctuations can disrupt sleep patterns and energy levels, even when the baby is sleeping.

Understanding these natural changes the woman will experience and offering her love, support and continuous help with baby can truly help mitigate the effects of these drastic hormonal shifts.

Think that midwifery care is expensive? It's not just the time your midwife is with you in person that you are paying for, but so many things behind the scenes that she is doing, or sacrifices she is making, to make sure that you can get the care you need.

The beginning of October found us celebrating “National Midwifery Week”, and the posts on social media about midwives and the personal care that they provide to so many moms and families got me thi…

Today is the 10th anniversary of Heritage Births!!!

When I started this practice, I walked away from a guaranteed salary with another birth center as a staff midwife. I had no clients, no prospects of clients, no website for marketing, and a lot of fears about how I would help support my family. God calmed those fears, and asked me to take a leap of faith and trust that He would catch me. Within 12 hours of turning in my resignation, I had 7 clients sign up for care with me!

In the years since, my small home birth practice in Lubbock turned into a birth center in Lubbock, then a birth center in Abilene. My husband has joined me on staff as a Birth Photographer and my Office Manager, and we've helped over 450 families welcome their sweet babies into the world! I'm so grateful that God asked me to step out in faith, and that my husband supported me in following that calling, even when it seemed crazy.

Thank you to all the families who have supported us, placed your trust in us, and made our dream of serving you a reality. If you have experienced care with us and would be willing to share your testimonial with a Google review (https://share.google/P67R3b0uxHMKVni3V), we'd be so grateful 🥰. Here's to many, many more years and hundreds more beautiful blessings entering the world!

Established birth center facility for sale in Abilene, Texas!--$675,000

Custom built in 2021, the Heritage Birth Center in Abilene is 2,561sqft, with three birth suites and two office spaces, set on a quiet street in a residential neighborhood, only two minutes away from the hospital. Each birth room has a unique custom ceiling, full ensuite bathroom and an attached privacy patio with squatting bars and astroturf to be soft on laboring bare feet. Built-in cabinetry with lots of storage, upgraded countertops, and a sink are in each birth room for midwife ease. In 2025, two brand new HVAC systems were installed with new ductwork for maximum energy efficiency, and with a tankless hot water heater, your clients will never run out or have to wait for hot water for their showers or extra-large birthing tubs. The reception area is cozy and comfortable, but also large enough to host childbirth education, parenting and breastfeeding classes.

Not only is this a fabulous facility, but it is an important asset to this community since it is the ONLY birthing center for a 2-hour radius. There are several home birth midwives who practice in the area, but our hospital midwife will soon no longer be doing births, and there is an OB/GYN shortage in Abilene. Adding to this, the fact that I am moving and no longer taking new clients, many families are already feeling the effects of living in a community where there are not enough providers to keep up with demand.

This birth center has been very profitable for me as a solo-practice CPM, who is almost exclusively self-pay, taking about 50 births a year, but it would be even more so for a CNM who is able to bill BCBS and Tricare insurances. My family and I are moving a couple hours away to be closer to Fort Worth for the needs of our kids, but I’m happy to help you get set up to run the birth center and to integrate you in the medical community. I very much want to keep this birth center an option for all the clients in the community who desire it, so I will help you in any way I can to make sure that you are successful!

Check out the link below to see a virtual walk-through tour and see pictures of the facility. Please feel free to contact me (Alexandra Wyatt) directly with any additional questions you have or to set up a time to come visit. Email: alex@heritagebirths.com Cell: 818-421-1355

Still one of my favorite pictures. 🥰

I've posted this before, but I'll post it again since it love it so much....

When you get to do births with your best friend (the fabulous chiropractor Dr. Michaele Posey), they're just more fun 😍😘😆🤣. I don't remember what you said that made me crack up, but I love getting to take care of our mamas and babies together.

I love when clients bring their babies to visit me! This beautiful boy is almost 4 months old and has the sweetest smile and personality. Loved getting to hug and catch up with his mama too since I’ve missed seeing her for visits 🥹🥰

Did you know? Research from the National Institute of Health (NIH) shows that midwife-led care is linked to lower rates of interventions—like inductions and cesarean births—while also increasing satisfaction for birthing families.

At ATMMTP, we’re proud to prepare future midwives to provide this kind of evidence-based, family-centered care—the kind of care that truly makes a difference.
