Q: Can I walk, run, or hike with a prosthetic limb?

A: Yes! Many return to walking, running, hiking, and even more advanced activities with the right prosthetic design and support. Today’s prosthetic technology includes wide range of components that can be matched to your goals and the terrain you want to conquer. From everyday walking feet to energy-return designs built for running, from microprocessor knees that help with speed and stability to specialty feet made for uneven ground, trails, or outdoor terrain.

Your prosthesis can be custom-designed to fit the life you’re aiming to get back to. With a proper socket fit, consistent physical therapy, and a team committed to encouraging your progress, you can move forward with confidence and strength. We’ll help you choose components that support your mobility, your safety, and the activities that bring you joy.

Q: Will a prosthesis be comfortable and wearable all day?

A: Comfort is a top priority. Initially, your residual limb may need gradual break-in periods to adjust to the prosthesis, helping prevent soreness or skin irritation. Over time, with proper fit, alignment, and care, many patients are able to wear their prosthesis throughout the day with minimal discomfort.

At Real Life Prosthetics, our clinical team works closely with you to monitor fit, recommend appropriate liners or socks, and provide guidance on skin and adjustments. Regular follow-ups ensure your prosthesis continues to support safe, comfortable, and independent mobility, allowing you to engage fully in daily life and activities.

Even though Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow today, we aren’t letting a little more winter slow us down!

While the groundhog predicts six more weeks of frost, we’re looking at things a bit differently. Spring is officially only 46 days away, but at Real Life Prosthetics, we believe that growth doesn’t wait for the temperature to rise.

Resilience is knowing that even when you’re standing in the snow (and ice), you carry seeds of your own “Spring” with you. Your strength, your journey, and your progress are always in bloom… no matter what the calendar says!

Stay resilient. Stay hopefully. Spring will be here before you know it 🌷

Q: How do I start with an orthosis if I’ve never used one before?

A: Typically, the process begins with a prescription or referral from your primary care provider, specialist, or surgeon. The first step with us is then a comprehensive consultation with one of our certified orthotists, where we assess your condition, mobility, strength, and personal goals to determine the type of orthotics that will best support you. Our team designs and fabricates your custom device in our in-house lab, ensuring precise fit and durability. We also provide hands-on training, guidance, and ongoing follow-ups so you can adjust safely, move confidently, and get the most benefit from your orthosis.

At Real Life Prosthetics, we’re here to support you from prescription to long-term care, helping you regain mobility and independence.

Q: How soon after amputation can I be fitted for a prosthesis?

A: The path to your first prosthesis begins once your residual limb heals and significant swelling reduces.

At Real Life Prosthetics, that means first making sure your incision is healed and your limb is stable enough for casting, about 6-8 weeks after surgery, though timing can vary widely depending on healing, overall health, and your comfort.
