Mary Magdalene Johnson

Mary Magdalene Johnson passed away on March 18, 2026, at Bristol Regional Medical Center. Born on July 26, 1943, in Castlewood, Virginia, to the late Lloyd and Pauline Marshall, Mary lived a richly dedicated life marked by kindness and devotion to family.

Mary worked at Gordon Garments for almost 30 years, as well as working alongside her husband on the farm. Her hands were always busy, whether cooking for her family or crafting beautiful quilts. Mary found joy and satisfaction in the fruits of her labors. She loved working in her garden, canning vegetables, and tending to her flowers.

A lover of travel, Mary was always prepared for her next journey, delighted by the experience of discovery and new surroundings. She looked forward to Fridays at Senior Bingo, where she enjoyed fellowshipping, as well as outings with her cherished friends.

Mary's warmth and kindness extended to all creatures great and small; she adored her dog Lady, her four cats, and even her peacock—companions who enriched her days.

At her core, Mary was a kind and welcoming soul, known for making others feel at ease. Her sweet and thoughtful nature shone through in her ever-present concern for those around her. Her love of the Lord was a guiding anchor throughout her life, and her family was the center of her world. She attended church at Fleenor's Memorial Chapel.

In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband, James "Jim" Garland Johnson.

She is survived by her treasured children—Cloe Eva Barker (Jack), Jimmy Johnson (Tammy), and Janie Miller—as well as her beloved grandchildren, LeAnne Duckett (Derek), Samantha Cox (Zach), Katie Ritter (Cameron), and Brianna Mitchell. Her legacy of love continues through her great-grandsons, Boone, Brooks, Easton, and Parker, along with a new grandson expected in August. Mary also leaves behind her sisters, Ruth Massie and Mae Baker-Holbrook (Freddy), and her brother, Claude Marshall (Brenda), along with several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Friday, March 20, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Farris Funeral Service – Main Street Chapel, located at 427 E Main St, Abingdon, VA. The funeral service will follow at 7:00 p.m., with Pastor Roger Ball officiating. A graveside service will take place on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Forest Hills Memory Gardens, 19415 Lee Hwy, Abingdon, VA. Pallbearers will be David Keene, Derek Duckett, Zach Cox, Cameron Ritter, Anthony Johnson, and Jimmy Johnson.

Mary Magdalene Johnson’s enduring spirit, gentle heart, and unwavering love touched all who had the privilege to know her. Her memory will remain a cherished blessing to her family and community.

Abingdon, VA - Pauline Compton McClanahan, age 97, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 14, 2026, in Johnston Memorial Hospital. Pauline was born in Grundy, VA to the late Worley and Gusta Clevinger Compton. She and her late husband, Virgil McClanahan, moved to Abingdon in the mid 1970’s. Pauline enjoyed spending time at the lake and dining out. She was a member of Green Springs Presbyterian Church.

In addition to her parents and husband, Pauline was preceded in death by three siblings, Edith C. Looney, Nell Newberry Matney, and Roby Compton. She is survived by nieces and nephews Teresa Johnson and husband Mark of Keen Mountain, VA, Deborah Rattyz of Fredericksburg, VA, Jennifer Parish and husband Bill of Abingdon, VA, Denise Marcum and husband Pete of Abingdon, VA; brother-in-law, Kyle McClanahan and wife Sue of Grundy, VA; and several great nieces and nephews who she dearly loved.

Cryptside services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 18, 2026, in Knollkreg Memorial Park Mausoleum. Rev. Bill Parris will officiate.

Ervin Harold McClanahan, Jr.

Harold McClanahan passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 14th at the age of 77. He will be remembered as a devoted son, brother, uncle, loyal friend, and a man whose life was defined by service, compassion, and deep care for others.

Harold had a lifelong love of travel and found great joy in exploring new places and experiences. Closer to home, nothing mattered more to him than family. He was blessed with many special friendships that enriched his life over the years. Harold valued these relationships deeply and was known for his loyalty, thoughtfulness, and steady presence. Friends and family alike could count on him for support, kindness, and quiet encouragement.

Harold dedicated his professional life to public service, working for the Department of Social Services in Buchanan County, VA as Director until his retirement. His career reflected his strong sense of responsibility and commitment to helping others. That same spirit of service extended beyond his work, as he lovingly served as a caregiver for both his aunt and his mother, offering them unwavering support, patience, and dignity.

Harold is survived by his beloved family, including his mother, Maurene McClahanan, brother, Gary McClanahan, Lindsay Cook (Dayne), Ben McClanahan (Leah), Betsy Jones (Chip), Blake Snead (Lindsey), Dana Snead (Queen), brother-in-law, Jim Snead, and sister-in-law, Linda McClanahan as well as several great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Ervin McClanahan, sister, Pamela Snead, and aunt, Maudene O'Flaherty.

A service will be held Wednesday, March 18th at 11:00am at Greenhills Memory Gardens, Claypool Hill, VA. In lieu of flowers, the family invites those who wish to honor Harold’s memory to do so through an act of kindness, service to others, or by making a donation to the Make-A-Wish of Western & Central North Carolina, 6324 Fairview Road, #500, Charlotte, NC 28210.

Betty Jane Arnold, a cherished member of the Abingdon community and co-owner of Abingdon Electronics (Radio Shack) for more than three decades, passed away peacefully on March 14, 2026, at her daughter's home in Bristol, Virginia. Born on January 29, 1942, in Abingdon, VA, Betty lived a life marked by dedication, warmth, and an enduring commitment to her family and friends.

A proud graduate of Cleveland High School in Abingdon, Betty’s connection to her hometown was deep and lifelong. Alongside her career at Abingdon Electronics, where she was known for her steadfast leadership and personable nature, Betty touched the lives of many through her kindness and welcoming spirit. Her gentle nature and great sense of humor made her a beloved figure not only in business but at every gathering, where she always had a way of making others feel comfortable and valued.

Betty’s greatest joy came from her family, especially playing with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, whose laughter and presence brightened her days. She delighted in simple pleasures such as shopping outings and sharing moments that brought happiness to those around her. She leaves behind a legacy of love and compassion that will be treasured by all who knew her.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Weldon Saltz and Rosa Lee Bailey Saltz, her husband, Denzil Arnold, and her siblings, Norma Jean Saltz, Jerry Wayne Saltz and Bonnie Sue Saltz Atkins.

She is survived by her devoted daughters, Sharon Flanders and her husband, Ken, and Susan Dugger, who stood by her side with unwavering love. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Sarah Michelle Flanders Smith (Brandon), Kristen Flanders (Ben Parsley), and Rebecca Elizabeth Dugger Meade (Hunter), along with her great-grandchildren Eli James Smith, Emma Grace Smith, Ellie Rose Smith, Peyton Gentry Meade, Sawyer James Meade, and Greyson Landry Meade, carry forward her spirit and warmth. Betty was also dearly loved by her cousin and best friend, Barbara Wyatt (James), as well as by several nieces and nephews who remember her fondly.

A visitation will be held on March 19, 2026, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Farris Funeral Service – Main Street Chapel, located at 427 E Main St, Abingdon, VA. This will be an opportunity for friends, family, and the community to honor Betty’s memory and celebrate a life well lived.

Birgit Susanne Drouin

Birgit Susanne Drouin, age 63, passed away at her home in Meadowview, VA on March 11, 2026. Birgit was born on March 15, 1962, in Aschaffenburg, Germany alongside her twin sister, Claudia.

In 1980, Birgit gave birth to her only child, Daniel Heininger, in Wasserlos, Germany. In Spring 1989, Birgit met the love of her life, Chris Drouin, at her sister Eva’s wedding while Chris was stationed in Hanau, Germany as a United States Army Soldier. In Fall 1989, the couple wed in Germany before Chris returned to the United States bringing home his new bride. The couple lived in multiple cities before settling in Fuquay Varina, NC at the home they built in 1996.

In 2008, Birgit received her United States citizenship and was honored to be an American. Until the very end Birgit loved to make anything and everything, she could the colors red, white, and blue. The United States would be her home even though she wasn’t born here.

Birgit and Chris called Fuquay Varina, NC home for many years before deciding to build their dream home in Meadowview, VA to be close to their son, Daniel, and his growing family. In 2023, the couple retired in what would be their forever home up on the hill. Birgit took much pride in the home and all the effort she made to make it to the haven she would spend the rest of her days.

On December 31, 2024, Birgit was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive Leukemia. Birgit fought hard to the very end and sadly passed away after a long battle on March 11, 2026.

Birgit was so much more than her battle with cancer. She loved her garden and could make anything grow with her gifted green thumb. Birgit was an amazing homemaker, cook, gardener, florist, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend.

Birgit is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 36 years, Chris Drouin; son Daniel Heininger and wife Elizabeth; grandchildren Stevie Grace and Colter Heininger; her twin sister Claudia Horn of Germany; her oldest sister Eva Radwanski of Germany; very special friends who became family, Matt Bost and wife Zoe and their children Daisy and Jackson Bost of Mount Airy, NC; and many other loving friends.

Details of a Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.

Norma Bott Kestner

Norma Bott Kestner, a devoted mother, cherished homemaker, and beloved member of the Abingdon community, passed away peacefully on March 14, 2026, in Bristol, Virginia. Born on June 2, 1946, in Abingdon, VA, to the late Dave Berry Bott and Dorothy Flanagan Bott. Norma lived a life marked by love, dedication, and a deep connection to family and simple joys.

Norma graduated from John S. Battle High School in 1963, a milestone that paved the way for a lifetime devoted to raising her children and nurturing her home. She had an unparalleled talent in the kitchen, especially revered for her mashed potatoes, which remain legendary among family and friends. Her home was always filled with the warmth of her cooking and the care she took in maintaining her household.

Beyond her role as a mother and homemaker, Norma found immense joy in tending to her flower beds and spending time outdoors, where she felt most at peace. Her love for nature was matched by her passion for her "stories" — notably The Young and the Restless and Days of Our Lives, favorites that brought her daily comfort and joy. She also cherished moments with her cousins, with whom she shared the lively pastime of square dancing, illustrating her vibrant spirit and love of community.

In addition to her parents Norma was preceded in death by her loving husband Charles Kestner, two sisters, Sandra Byington and Diane Wilson.

Norma is survived by her son, Mark Kestner and his wife, Sheri, and her daughter, Kim Denton and her husband, Gregg. Her family extends to five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild,each of whom was a source of immense pride and happiness for her.

A graveside service will be held in her honor on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, at Forest Hills Memory Gardens located at 19415 Lee Hwy, Abingdon, VA, at 11:00 am with Pastor Les Ketron officiating.
