Charles William “Chip” Heaps Jr., 68, of Chestertown, Maryland, passed away on February 15, 2026, as the result of a tragic event at his home.

Born in Havre de Grace and raised in Harford County, Chip carried with him the values of hard work, loyalty, and a deep love of the outdoors that shaped him from an early age. An Eagle Scout, he developed a lifelong commitment to stewardship, service, and responsibility that would guide the course of his life. He was a graduate of The John Carroll School in Bel Air, where lifelong friendships first took root.

Chip attended Randolph-Macon College, where he formed enduring bonds and was a proud member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. The brotherhood he found there remained meaningful throughout his life and reflected the loyalty and camaraderie that defined him.

An avid hunter and passionate outdoorsman, Chip dedicated 32 years of his professional life to Ducks Unlimited, building a career that left a lasting mark on conservation efforts nationwide. He served in leadership roles, including Maryland State Campaign Chairman, and was deeply involved in expanding the organization’s reach and impact across the Mid-Atlantic and beyond. Chip built a broad community of volunteers, donors, and friends united by a shared purpose and respect for wetlands and waterfowl conservation. He also served on the board of the Waterfowl Festival in Easton, and on the board of the Coastal Conservation Association. His impact on conservation initiatives will continue to be felt for generations.

Those who knew Chip will remember a true gentleman – steady, positive, and unfailingly decent. He valued conversation and connection, greeted others with a genuine smile, and quietly encouraged those around him to be better. Those who spent time with him were reminded to speak kindly, love their families fiercely, and focus on what truly matters. He did not seek recognition, but he earned respect everywhere he went.

Music was woven into Chip’s life from the beginning. For Chip, live music wasn’t just entertainment; it was gathering, friendship, and joy. His enthusiasm and generosity of spirit helped build community wherever he went, whether at a conservation event, fraternity gathering, on the golf course, or at a live show.

Chip shared a 42-year marriage of enduring love and strength with his beloved wife, Patricia “Patty” Heaps. He was a proud father to Lindsay Warren (Will) and Charles William Heaps III “Chad” (Clare), and “Ducky” to his grandchildren, Amy Ruth Heaps, William Charles Warren Jr. (“Charlie”), Sarah Louise Heaps, and Peter Wilson Warren. Born from his lifelong devotion to waterfowl, the nickname became something far more meaningful. As Ducky, he was playful, protective, and endlessly kind. His grandchildren knew they were the light of his life and deeply cherished.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles William Heaps Sr. and Ruth Heaps.

Despite the significant loss, Patty remains surrounded by the strength, love, and support of her family and community.

Chip’s legacy lives on in the land he protected, the music he loved, and the family who will always carry his strength forward.

Arrangements are still being finalized, but are tentatively planned for February 28th in Harford County. Please reference the obituary in the Aegis next week for additional details.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ducks Unlimited at www.ducks.org/get-involved/memorial-giving

The 4th Annual Comfort and Company Valentine’s Luncheon held February 8th, brought warmth, laughter, and heartfelt connection to widows and widowers in our community.

The gathering welcomed both familiar faces and new friends, creating a space where everyone felt at ease and included.

Guests kicked off the afternoon with a lively “get-to-know-you” icebreaker while enjoying appetizers and drinks — the perfect way to spark conversation and build new friendships. The room quickly filled with smiles, stories, and plenty of laughter.

Holly McComas welcomed everyone warmly and Melissa Kennedy shared greetings as well.

A delicious luncheon catered by Acappella followed, featuring salmon, mashed potatoes, green beans, ravioli, meatballs, and Caesar salad. Sweet treats were the perfect finale, with cookies from Jarrettsville Creamery and rich brownies from Acappella.

Adding to the festive spirit were beautiful Valentine floral centerpieces generously donated by Richardson Florist. Seven lucky guests took home these stunning arrangements as prizes, making the day even more special.

From start to finish, it was a joyful celebration of friendship, remembrance, and togetherness — truly a fun time had by all.

Thank you to everyone who made it such a special time. 💗

Thomas Stevenson Close, 68, died suddenly on February 10, 2026, at his beloved Uncle’s Goodwill Farm. Born in Baltimore, Tom was the beloved son of the late Albert Patterson Close and Mary Lucile (Robinson) Close.

Tom was a graduate of St. Margaret School, John Carroll School, and Harford Community College. He proudly served in the United States Coast Guard Reserve. Tom’s childhood days started on Roland Avenue in Bel Air, where he was a proud member of the “Robinson Street Gang.” He had an early interest in western horseback riding, livestock, and agriculture. He was a member of Harford County 4-H, where he showed pigs and steers. He worked summers at his uncle’s farm in Churchville until his family obtained their own farm in Level.

As an adult, Tom found his passion in sales and land. Initially a real estate agent, and later in his career, he partnered with his childhood friend Bob Wilson and started developing land. Along with two other close friends, he built and operated Forest Hill Mini Storage and the Bel Air Car Wash. In 2001, he bought and renovated Uncle’s Good Will. There, his passion for livestock continued, where he raised cattle—from Charolais to Hereford angus cross and eventually Akaushi. He and his partner started Bel Air Racing Stables, buying broodmares, breeding, and racing thoroughbred horses. Tom’s love of land also included his prize vegetable garden, where he took great pride in raising his spring, summer, and fall vegetables. His reward was sharing his bounty with friends, family, and neighbors.

Tom loved anything outdoors and was always eager to plan a hunting and fishing trip. In his downtime, he enjoyed happy hours and talking with his many friends. He valued friendships and family and loved communicating with all of you. He often ended a conversation with “I love you.”

Tom is survived by his beloved wife, Concetta (Cosentino) Close; his sons, Thomas S. Close, Jr. (Cora) and John Patterson Close; his siblings, Albert Patterson Close, Jr., Clare Close Miller (John), Geoffrey Robinson Close (Jeanne), Mary Lucile Hatter (Bill), Jane Close Levering (Terry), and Robert Williams Close; and many nieces and nephews.

Tom was preceded in death by his brother, James Adams Close.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Highlands School, 2409 Creswell Road, Bel Air, Maryland 21015, or to Harford County 4-H, 6 Cherry Hill Road, Street, MD 21154.
