We get to know our patients like family. We celebrate their milestones, we learn their stories, and sometimes, we feel their absence more than people might expect.
Every so often, a family reaches out after a loved one has passed, asking what to do with their hearing aids. And while those calls are never easy, they’re filled with so much generosity.
If you ever find yourself in that position, know this: hearing aids can be donated and make a real difference. We collect them here at the office and pass them along to organizations like The Hearing and Speech Foundation in Tennessee, where they’re refurbished and given to someone in need.
It’s one small way a loved one’s care can continue, helping someone stay connected, just like they did. If you have questions, we’re always here to walk you through it.

Hearing aids often start with the manufacturer's “first-fit” settings, basically the default setting, like a new phone.

I had a patient tell me, “They were programmed when I got them, so they should be fine… right?”
Sometimes they are. But without verification, it’s also common for fittings to be:

Too soft 👉 speech still unclear (especially s, f, th)
Too sharp 👉 loud but not comfortable
Unbalanced 👉 one ear working harder 👉 more listening fatigue

That’s why we use Real-Ear Measurement (REM). It takes us from “let’s try this and hope” to “let’s measure and confirm.”

REM helps us verify things like:

✅ soft speech (grandkids, across-the-room voices)
✅ everyday speech clarity + comfort
✅ loud sounds staying comfortable
✅ settings matching evidence-based targets

If your hearing aids feel “off,” let’s check them!

Daily care doesn’t have to be complicated. Some of the best things you can do at home:

🦻 Wipe your hearing aids with a soft, dry cloth each night
🦻 Use a cleaning brush to clear the microphone ports
🦻 Check wax guards or tubing regularly

Keeping your devices free of debris helps prevent sound issues and unnecessary repairs. When in doubt, we’re always happy to show you how. 😊

👂 One small change can make a big difference in understanding.

When speaking to someone with hearing loss, try to:

💬 Get their attention first
💬 Face them directly
💬 Speak clearly (not louder)

Visual cues like facial expressions and lip movements play a huge role in understanding speech, even for people wearing hearing aids. Good communication isn’t about repeating yourself… its about connecting.

The other day, I was chatting with a patient when the topic of Apple’s newest AirPods came up, the ones that now offer hearing support features.

It’s exciting, no doubt. Technology is evolving fast, and features like conversation boost and sound amplification can genuinely help people become more aware of their hearing.

But here’s the thing I always come back to 👉 there’s a difference between amplifying sound and truly understanding someone’s hearing health.

As an audiologist, I know how personal and complex hearing loss can be. It’s not just about volume; it’s about clarity, the brain’s processing, and the emotional impact of missed connections. 🧠 And while consumer tech might offer a helpful boost for some, it can’t replace a medical-grade, professionally guided solution, especially when it comes to long-term health, tinnitus, cognitive load, or the social effects of hearing loss.

Devices like these may be a starting point. But they’re not the full picture!

On World Hearing Day, we’re proud to support awareness, prevention, and access to hearing care for all. Because hearing health is health. 👂✨Hearing health often goes unnoticed, but it affects more people than you might think.

Over 5% of the world’s population lives with disabling hearing loss, making it one of the most common (and overlooked) health concerns worldwide.

The good news? Many hearing concerns can be identified early and managed with routine care. Regular hearing checkups and timely support help keep you connected to the people and moments that matter most.

A quick daily clean can make a big difference. 🧼

Wiping your hearing aids with a soft, dry cloth at the end of each day helps remove oils, moisture, and debris that can affect sound quality. Keeping microphone ports and wax traps clear allows your devices to work the way they’re meant to, consistently and clearly.

Think of it like brushing your teeth: a little daily care goes a long way. 👂✨

When someone asks me, “Which hearing aid should I get?” my answer is always: It depends on your lifestyle and your hearing test.

Before I recommend a technology tier, I’ll ask things like:
👉 Are you in meetings or an office?
👉 How often are you in restaurants?
👉 Do you go to church/theater/large events?
👉 Any noisy hobbies (hunting, motorcycles, woodworking)?

Because one “noisy place” can change everything. I had a patient who loved going to shows at Barter Theater. Mid-range was fine at home, but in the theater, she needed premium features to be comfortable.
Here’s the key: Your diagnostic test results guide the power and processing you need, and your lifestyle helps us choose the extras!

As an audiologist, I see this story all the time:

A patient comes in because their spouse gently nudged them to schedule (or scheduled the appointment for them 😉). They usually start with, “I hear fine, everyone mumbles,” and I can tell they feel skeptical.

Honestly, I get it. We slow it down, discuss real-life moments such as TV volume and group conversation, and then review their hearing test results.

The best part? The “wins” are often small but powerful: TV is lower, and couples always report that there is less repeating needed, and they can tell their spouse is more confident in different listening environments.

If you’ve been on the fence, you’re not alone. When you’re ready, we’re here to help, without pressure!

One of my favorite things to see at appointments? A “second set of ears.”

A patient once asked, “Do I really need to bring someone? I don’t want to bother them.” And look, I get that. But I also know that I’ve gone to appointments alone and forgotten half of what I was told. 🫣

Here’s why we encourage it: a spouse, adult child, or friend can help you remember instructions, ask questions, and support you as you adjust. And when it comes to questions about areas that your struggle with your hearing, sometimes we miss more than we realize - its helpful to have someone else in the room to help get a clear idea of where we need to help you hear better
