Its New Year's Eve! 🥳🎆🎇
However you choose to celebrate counting down to bring in the New Year, we just wanted to provide a gentle reminder that "supervision" DOES NOT mean "safe". Alcohol is not safe for the developing brains and bodies of teens, even if they are drinking under the "supervision" of parents! Parents providing alcohol to minors can be held legally liable! So, DON'T BE A PARTY TO TEENAGE DRINKING!

As we close out the year and begin prepping to host New Year parties and gatherings, please be reminded to take the ONE ☝ step to lock🔒 away all current medications💊 in the home. Locking away medications prevents access from those they are not intended. Preventing access can prevent the misuse, abuse, and addiction!

Have you heard about the recent Executive Order that reschedules ma*****na to a Schedule III drug? Being a Schedule III drug gives the ma*****na industry—recreational and medical—access to more than $2 billion in tax write-offs, because they’ll be able to deduct business expenses. The most concerning expense is advertising. We know the ma*****na industry relentlessly advertises to kids using child-friendly packaging, bright colors, and other child-friendly products of all kinds (even Sesame Street characters). THIS is our worry!!! 😱😨 Those activities become more financially attractive under Schedule III, and we can expect more of it. Follow the link to learn about other possible implications!

This past month, our very own, Brian DiNapoli with our partners at Drug-Free Lumpkin 365, attended the Addiction Epidemic in Georgia – Public Policy Conversation event at the State Capitol! This is what he had to share:

"As someone who quit drinking more than 25 years ago, the entire session deeply resonated with me. We heard from members of the General Assembly advocating on behalf of people in recovery, along with powerful testimony from community members and an all-star panel. One message that stayed with me: we must keep showing up for people living with substance use disorder and those fighting for recovery—especially in the thick of the battle.

Georgia's role as a transportation hub has made it a target for fentanyl distribution, and we must do a better job addressing it.Overdose is the leading cause of death for 18–49-year-olds—the heart of our workforce—and it impacts high school and college students as well.

This is not a partisan issue. Substance use disorder doesn’t care how much money you make, how old you are, what degree you have, or what race you are—it affects everyone. We must come together around common-sense solutions."

Thank you so much for your dedication and candor Brian! Keep up the good work in spreading the message of youth substance use prevention!
