I’m sitting here on the ground, staring into a pen holding eight horses.
Just eight… out of so many being shipped out today.
I needed something to hold onto—something I could focus on, something I could actually change in the middle of all this. So I chose the pen right in front of me.
Eight lives.
Two former prison mares—one 26, the other nearing 20. They gave everything that was asked of them, like so many do… and still, this is where they ended up.
An elderly gray mare, so painfully thin, so weak she can barely stay on her feet.
A former racehorse—once believed in, once given a chance… somehow still abandoned to this fate.
A senior paint. A sorrel gelding. Another gray mare.
Different stories. Different paths.
Same ending… unless something changes.
Because the truth is—no horse is safe from this.
Not the trained ones.
Not the hardworking ones.
Not even the ones who were once deeply loved.
Once they end up here, this is usually where their story stops.
But today… as I sit here looking at them, I hold onto something they don’t yet know—
They are not alone.
They have a community behind them.
A community that shows up.
A community that refuses to look away.
A community that fights for second chances… when no one else will.
