Pontotoc County Historical and Genealogical Society

Pontotoc County Historical and Genealogical Society PCHGS was begun in 1970 by a group of people who felt that knowing about one's family tree was important. They purchased this building in May, 1970.

Our library is only open now on Tuesday afternoon 12:30 -4:00. Covid really took a hit on us. We lost board members during that time and we lost researchers. All of this makes us very sad too. We have books from all over the United States. We have so many materials for people to use to find their family tree. People have almost quit coming in.
We are a non profit and we depend on donations. We still have water, gas, electric bills. We still have insurance whether people come in or not. We do not want to completely shut down but we are realistic.

We are downsizing at the library. We have early census records beginning with the 1790 census of the early colonies of which we are disposing. If you would like any of these books come to the genealogy library at 221 west 16th. Bring your own boxes.

Working on a grant opportunity for the historical society, and I need your help! Would anyone be interested in writing a letter in support of a grant to do repair work on the old Hall’s building, and how it will benefit Stonewall, and revitalize the downtown area. The deadline is 10:00 PM 3/31/26.

All help would be greatly appreciated!!

Friday afternoon fun fact!

The Frisco Depot on West Main Street opened to passengers in 1913.

Three railroads - The Frisco, The Santa Fe, and The Oklahoma City, Ada & Atoka - once provided service to Ada.

On New Year's Eve, each railroad had an engine parked at its station and at midnight all three engines blew their whistles and rang bells to welcome the New Year!

This picture is from 1917. Men are leaving for the Army and WWI. Family and friends are nearby to wish them farewell and send prayers for a safe return!

A newspaper article in 1935 identified the players on the Hazel Atlas Glass Company softball team. Many businesses in Ada had softball teams in the 1930s. The history in newspapers of the Hazel Atlas Company has formed a new book on that company before Brockway Glass bought the company.
