Roy left the farm in 1956 to join the United States Air Force where he served eight years active duty as a jet engine mechanic. After serving his country he worked for Delta Airlines for four years. His passion for farming never left, so he returned to Cook County 1968 to start his own farm. In 1977 he had a chance to buy Pine Valley Store, an Agri Supply business in western Cook County. In 1984 he had a renewed interest in serving in the military and enlisted in the Air Force National Guard where he served as a communication specialist and retired as a Master Sergeant in 1998. As farming became harder to make a living in the early 1980s, Roy had an opportunity to take a job at the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany GA where he worked for 25 years and retired in 2012. After retiring, Roy enjoyed traveling with his beloved wife of 56 years, Erma Jean. He loved to go fishing in the Little River pursuing his favorite fish the Red Breast Bream. After losing his beloved Erma Jean in 2016, Roy spent most of his time visiting his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren where he was affectionately known as G-Daddy.
