🚨 CHIEF’S CORNER: Don’t Let a Snow Drift Become a Silent Killer 🚨
Folks, as your Fire Chief, I’ve seen firsthand how a beautiful snowfall can turn into a serious hazard in a matter of hours. Out here, we look out for one another, and right now, that means looking at the side of your house.
In this extreme cold, your furnace and water heater are working overtime. If their "breath" gets choked off by a snowbank or ice buildup, that exhaust has nowhere to go but back inside your home.
❄️ Why "Clear" Means "Safe"
When vents for your furnace, water heater, or dryer get buried, you’re looking at four major risks:
Carbon Monoxide (CO) Buildup: This is the big one. CO is invisible, odorless, and deadly.
Appliance Failure: Your furnace will "lock out" to protect itself, leaving you without heat in sub-zero temps.
Fire Hazards: Dryer vents clogged with snow cause heat to back up—a recipe for a lint fire.
Gas Meter Damage: Ice buildup on your regulator can cause pressure issues or even gas leaks.
👨🚒 Your 5-Minute Safety Check
Grab your boots and a shovel (or a broom—be gentle around those gas pipes!) and do a lap around the house.
Locate Every Vent: Use the photo below as a guide. You’re looking for white PVC pipes and metal hoods.
Clear the Path: Dig out the snow at least 3 feet around the vent to allow for proper airflow and to account for drifting.
Check the Gas Meter: Gently brush off heavy snow. Never kick or hit the meter to break ice; if it’s encased in heavy ice, call your utility provider.
Chief’s Pro-Tip: Make sure you have working Carbon Monoxide detectors on every level of your home. If an alarm goes off, get everyone outside immediately and call 911.
Stay warm, stay vigilant, and let’s keep our community safe this winter.
