We are incredibly proud to celebrate a series of major career promotions for our part-time staff!

At Advance Fire Department, 9️⃣5️⃣% of our paid part-time firefighters are also career first responders. When our members promote and lead in major departments across the region, they bring that elite-level experience and advanced training directly back to our community.

Please join us in congratulating these dedicated professionals on their new ranks:

👩🏼‍🚒 Austin Plemmons – Promoted to Captain at the City of Winston-Salem Fire Department.

👩🏼‍🚒 Daniel Burke – Promoted to Captain at the Charlotte Fire Department.

👩🏼‍🚒 Amber Myers – Promoted to Engineer at the Clemmons Fire Department.

👩🏼‍🚒 Emily Dobey – Promoted to Crew Chief at Yadkin County EMS.

Whether they are commanding a scene in Winston-Salem or Charlotte, driving the rig in Clemmons, or providing life-saving care in Yadkin County, these individuals represent the gold standard of service. Their growth makes our department, and your neighborhood, safer every single day.

Captain Plemmons, Captain Burke, Engineer Myers, and Crew Chief Dobey: thank you for your commitment to excellence. We are honored to have your leadership on our trucks!

🚨 CHIEF’S CORNER: Don’t Let a Snow Drift Become a Silent Killer 🚨

Folks, as your Fire Chief, I’ve seen firsthand how a beautiful snowfall can turn into a serious hazard in a matter of hours. Out here, we look out for one another, and right now, that means looking at the side of your house.

In this extreme cold, your furnace and water heater are working overtime. If their "breath" gets choked off by a snowbank or ice buildup, that exhaust has nowhere to go but back inside your home.

❄️ Why "Clear" Means "Safe"

When vents for your furnace, water heater, or dryer get buried, you’re looking at four major risks:

Carbon Monoxide (CO) Buildup: This is the big one. CO is invisible, odorless, and deadly.
Appliance Failure: Your furnace will "lock out" to protect itself, leaving you without heat in sub-zero temps.

Fire Hazards: Dryer vents clogged with snow cause heat to back up—a recipe for a lint fire.

Gas Meter Damage: Ice buildup on your regulator can cause pressure issues or even gas leaks.

👨‍🚒 Your 5-Minute Safety Check

Grab your boots and a shovel (or a broom—be gentle around those gas pipes!) and do a lap around the house.

Locate Every Vent: Use the photo below as a guide. You’re looking for white PVC pipes and metal hoods.
Clear the Path: Dig out the snow at least 3 feet around the vent to allow for proper airflow and to account for drifting.

Check the Gas Meter: Gently brush off heavy snow. Never kick or hit the meter to break ice; if it’s encased in heavy ice, call your utility provider.

Chief’s Pro-Tip: Make sure you have working Carbon Monoxide detectors on every level of your home. If an alarm goes off, get everyone outside immediately and call 911.

Stay warm, stay vigilant, and let’s keep our community safe this winter.

Our Favorite Mission of the Year: What Christmas is All About 🚒🎄

Every Christmas Eve morning for over 30 years, the trucks are rolling, but not for an emergency. We are loaded up and heading out for our annual "What Christmas Is All About" tradition.

Every year, we have the honor of visiting neighbors in our fire district who have faced tragedy or sickness over the last year. We’ve split the district into 4 routes, and our crews are out there right now—delivering treat baskets, singing Christmas carols (some better than others! 🎶), and spreading a little bit of joy where it’s needed most.

This event wouldn't be possible without the incredible dedication of our firefighters and volunteers. Thank you to everyone who showed up to pack baskets, ride the trucks, and lend their voices tonight. You are the heart of this department.

If you hear us coming down the road, give us a wave! 👋
