Whether you’re navigating icy sidewalks or bustling around during the holidays, take your time in order to prevent falls. Wear shoes with good traction if you’re headed out, and keep your house tidy to reduce your risk of tripping. Incorporating balance exercises into your fitness routine can help to strengthen your stability and coordination. And if you’ve fallen or you’re afraid of falling, talk to your doctor to explore additional ways to stay safe.

As smartphone use increases, so does the use of headphones and ear buds. Frequent use of these devices can increase your risk for hearing loss, ear infections, and tinnitus (ringing in the ears). To reduce your risk, experts recommend taking regular breaks and keeping your audio level below 60% of its maximum volume. Cleaning your headphones or ear buds can also reduce the risk of infections. If you’re concerned about your hearing, our audiologist Dr. Zack Hale provides comprehensive care in Afton.

If you’re feeling low as winter approaches, don’t write your feelings off as just the winter blues. Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a very real condition. Researchers believe it’s primarily caused by the lack of sunlight at this time of year and all the ways that can affect you internally. Symptoms of SAD include chronic fatigue, feelings of hopelessness, sleep disruption, and loss of interest in favorite activities. If you’re struggling with SAD, our providers and mental health specialists can guide you towards therapies and lifestyle rhythms that may help.
