What is a linking object?

A linking object is a symbolic item we hold onto after the loss of a loved one. It might be their sweater, favorite records, books, a day planner, perfume, or even saved voicemails. These meaningful items can bring comfort and help us feel connected while navigating grief.

Finding your linking object is deeply personal. Many people choose something tactile they can hold, smell, hear, or see — because our senses can powerfully access memories. The scent of cologne, the sound of a voice message, or cooking their favorite meal can help us feel close in moments we miss them most.

There is no “right way” to grieve. Holding onto a linking object isn’t about staying stuck — it’s about honoring love and memory while healing.

If you are coping with spouse loss or parent loss and want support in a compassionate, therapist-led setting, HOPE Connection is here for you in the Los Angeles area.

Every few years we become fascinated by the Summer or Winter Olympic Games. Not only the incredible physical feats and achievements of the athletes but also the incredible stories that accompany them. One story from the Olympics that has touched us is US Figure Skater Maxim Naumov’s, skating just a year after the tragic loss of his parents and other US Figure Skaters in the Flight 5342 crash last year. Are you watching the Olympics this year? Let us know of any other stories that have touched or inspired you in the comments!

Grief can feel overwhelming—like your mind and body are no longer in sync.
That’s where grounding comes in.

Grounding is a set of gentle practices that help you stay connected to your body and the present moment, especially when grief emotions feel intense. It can bring moments of calm, safety, and steadiness when everything feels unsteady.

A few grounding techniques to try:
Mindfulness walks – notice the sun on your skin, the air in your lungs, the sounds around you
Touch – compassionate self-massage or holding something comforting
Breath and body awareness – slowing down and reconnecting with your physical self

These practices don’t take the pain away—but they can help you feel supported as you move through it.

You don’t have to grieve alone.

Grief is an uncomfortable emotion. It’s raw and vulnerable and can pop up unexpectedly. But it’s not a shameful emotion, no one should feel ashamed for feeling their grief fully. It is important to allow yourself to feel these emotions as they come up so you can grieve without pushing it down.

When someone close to you loses their parent or spouse your first instinct might be to offer help. “Let me know what you need” seems like the perfect way to let them know you’re here to help support them. But for the griever this phrase is oddly daunting. There is so much they need that they don’t even know where to start and not to mention that involves them reaching out to ask. We all want to support our friends and loved ones during difficult times but being specific can be an even more helpful way to offer support and community. Building a village takes time and can be hard to navigate so swipe through for some ideas on how to start.
