This year, as the holiday season fills our calendars with gatherings, tree-lighting, and festive expectations… what if we invited something quieter in? 🌿

Dr. Shari Corbitt reminds us that simple, rhythmic movement — washing dishes, folding laundry, sweeping the floor — isn’t just about chores.

These gentle actions activate the parasympathetic nervous system, helping our minds settle and our creativity open up.

The holidays can bring joy and overwhelm: bright lights, full schedules, emotional undercurrents. This year, consider giving yourself the gift of simplicity:

A calm morning: linger over one cup of coffee instead of running to the next meeting

A brisk walk outside instead of one more scrolling session

A quiet space for your thoughts instead of more decorations, more obligations

As Dr. Corbitt says: “When our home, office, or car feels calm and cared for, it mirrors the calm we are cultivating inside.”

This holiday season, let’s lean into less—not more—so our nervous systems can rest, our hearts can soften, and our minds can open to genuine connection and meaning.

🌟 Your invitation: Choose one small, simple action each day to slow the pace. Notice how your breath deepens, your thoughts soften, and the space around you expands.

Be kind to yourself. Let the holiday feel—not just look—like a true celebration.

✨ Heading: Navigating holiday gatherings with confidence 🌟

🎉 The holidays bring connection and celebration—but if you’re in recovery, they can also spark anxiety.

Here’s how you can take control:

💫 Decide how much you’re comfortable sharing—your path, your pace, your boundaries. You don’t owe anyone your full story.

💫 Decide how much you’re comfortable sharing—your path, your pace, your boundaries. You don’t owe anyone your whole story.

💫 Prepare calm, honest responses for common questions like “Why aren’t you drinking?” or “What’s new?” so you stay grounded and true to your truth.

💫 Practice assertiveness: “I’d rather not get into that right now…thanks for understanding.” It’s okay to pause, redirect, protect your space.

💫 Practice assertiveness: “I’d rather not get into that right now…thanks for understanding.” It’s okay to pause, redirect, and protect your space.

💫 Frame your recovery positively—share how you’re feeling healthier, more present, growing. Recovery isn’t boring—it’s your renewal.

💫 Lean on your allies. Share with a friend or family member how they can support you, especially when things feel overwhelming. And above all—be gentle with yourself. You matter!

🌲 This season, your presence matters more than any drink or party. You’ve traveled so far. Celebrate your strength. Celebrate your growth. And know you don’t walk this path alone.

World Kindness Day is a reminder that even the smallest compassionate act can offer real support—especially when someone is struggling with their mental health.

✨Kindness doesn’t have to be big or complicated. It can be:

✨Listening without interrupting

✨Offering patience when someone is overwhelmed

✨Checking in, even if you don’t know what to say

✨Extending the same compassion to yourself

For those living with anxiety, trauma, depression, grief, or addiction, kindness can be the thing that helps them take the next step forward.

It says, “You matter. You’re not alone.”

As the leaves 🍁change and the air turns crisp, fall invites us into a season of transformation—and there’s no better time to renew your commitment to sobriety.

✨ Here’s how you can lean into this season in a healthier, sober way:

Celebrate the change of season as a metaphor for your journey: just like trees let go of their leaves to make space for new growth, you’re letting go of old habits and making room for something stronger.

Create new sober traditions: pumpkin-patch outings, cozy nights by the fire, nature hikes, movie nights with friends—there are so many ways to enjoy the season without alcohol.

Practice mindfulness in nature: use the beauty of autumn—crisp air, colorful leaves, quiet moments—to ground yourself, reflect, and journal what you see, hear and feel.

Reconnect with loved ones: use the season of gathering to strengthen relationships with people who support your journey—and set healthy boundaries when needed.

Set your sights ahead: reflect on how far you’ve come this year, and envision the goals you’ll reach in the months ahead. It's not just about staying sober—it’s about thriving.

🇺🇸 Today—and every day—we honor the incredible service of our veterans. Their courage protects our freedom, yet many face hidden battles with mental health.

Dr. Shari Corbitt reminds us that caring for veterans means more than saying “thank you.” It means protecting their emotional well-being, providing trauma-informed support, and standing by them as they transition to civilian life. Let’s make a promise! Lift up our veterans, listen to them, and support their mental health journeys. 💙

🧠 There is a real neurological explanation for cannabis-induced psychosis.

This isn’t opinion. It’s neuroscience.

In this clip, Dr. Shari Corbitt explains how high-potency THC can interrupt dopamine signaling in the brain, overwhelm the nervous system, and trigger psychotic symptoms in vulnerable individuals — sometimes after just one use.

Understanding the brain-based mechanisms helps reduce stigma and creates space for compassion, early intervention, and effective support.

November is "Movember"
— a time to talk about men’s health, inside and out. 💙

At Awakenings Treatment Center, we recognize that men often face unique barriers when it comes to addressing mental health and addiction.

Many are taught to “tough it out,” to stay silent, or to see vulnerability as weakness — but real strength lies in speaking up and seeking help.

We will also celebrate International Men’s Day on November 19 to honor the courage it takes for men to ask for support, open up about depression, anxiety, trauma, or substance use, and begin their healing journey.

If you or someone you love is struggling, remember: you don’t have to face it alone. Recovery isn’t a sign of defeat — it’s a declaration of hope. 💪💙

Mood swings vs. something more: when is it really Bipolar Disorder?

We’ve all had days when we feel off — maybe irritable, or unusually high-energy. But when do those ups and downs cross the line from “just moodiness” into something deeper?

Here’s what to look for:

1. A mood state that lasts days to weeks, not just a bad morning or short slump.

2. Significant shifts in how you feel, sleep, behave — for example, suddenly needing very little sleep but still feeling wired, or feeling hopeless for an extended period.

3. These shifts are impacting your work, relationships, and daily functioning—not just being a little “off.”

4. Patterns, not just one-off events: repeats of highs and lows.

✅ If any of this sounds familiar, it may be time to reach out — you don’t have to navigate this alone.

We believe knowing the difference saves lives. If your mood swings are more than “just a bad day,” let’s talk. Because when it’s more than moodiness, early detection and support can make all the difference.

🎗️ When "just w**d" isn’t so harmless.

You’ve seen the memes, heard the jokes — but what happens when that casual puff leads to something no one expected: a psychotic break, hallucinations, paranoia?

This article by Dr. Shari Corbitt, “When W**d Turns Dangerous: A Roadmap for Parents and Loved Ones,” sheds light on exactly that.

If you’re a parent, sibling, friend — or simply someone who cares — this is your wake-up call:

🧠 Why it matters: High-THC cannabis isn’t risk-free. It can increase dopamine, amplify anxiety or paranoia, and even trigger conditions like psychosis in susceptible individuals.

🤝 What you can do: Approach the conversation with empathy — not judgment. Acknowledge the role of cannabis in someone’s life and open the door to healthier alternatives. Awakenings Treatment Center

🚨 What to watch for: Hallucinations, delusions, inability to care for oneself — these are signs it’s more than “just getting high.” Immediate professional help may be needed.

🌟 The good news: Healing is possible. With early intervention, abstinence from use, and a strong support system, recovery is within reach.

If someone you care about is “just using w**d” — but you’re beginning to suspect it’s doing much more — don’t wait. Knowledge, compassion and action can change the trajectory.

🔍 Does insurance cover Intensive Outpatient Treatment (IOP)?

➡️ Whether you're thinking about care for yourself or a loved one, understand what factors matter — like program length, therapy hours, and whether it's in-network or out-of-network. **Note that we now accept Medi-Cal insurance.**

➡️ The good news? Under the Affordable Care Act, many addiction- and behavior-related outpatient programs are required to be covered by Marketplace plans.

➡️ At Awakenings, we work with major providers (Aetna, BlueCross, Cigna, TriCare, United Behavioral Health) and assist with verifying your insurance so you can focus on recovery — not just paperwork.

Read this short article 👉 Does Insurance Cover IOP Treatment? https://www.awakeningstreatment.com/blog/does-insurance-cover-intensive-outpatient-treatment 👉 to get all the details to start understanding your coverage. (It's very doable!)

California Drug Rehabs Vs. Patient Brokering

California drug rehabs are starting to feel the pain of new patient brokering laws and it’s only going to get worse. Learning from history is one of the most valuable tools in life. What California is now experiencing in drug rehab marketing legislation, Florida has been through. Florida with it’s “new Florida model” has set the pace for patient brokering laws in the drug and alcohol addiction treatment industry.

California drug rehabs and drug rehabilitation centers across the US have been operating unethically for many years. The he**in epidemic has exposed many fraudulent practices in this 40 billion dollar a year industry. Lawmakers are making their way across the nation with patient brokering laws to save lives and protect the vulnerable. The new laws in California are going to directly affect the ability to operate in the state if they are operating unethically, or adopt a healthy business and marketing mix.

California Drug Rehabs Need Proven Business and Marketing Strategies

The California Department of Healthcare Services (DHCS) website displays a Temporary Suspension Order, Revoked and Notice of Operation in Violation of Law Program List. This list has 84 substance abuse treatment centers.
