Password sharing and access is a hot topic of discussion amongst young couples today, even those in college. Everyone has different boundaries when it comes to password sharing, access to DMs, location sharing , following certain individuals, and liking certain individuals’ pictures.

What needs to be determined is are all these really “just” boundaries, or is this a way for an abuser to use social media to gain power and control over their partner.

Think before you post!

If you send or post a picture, you can’t control how it’s being
seen—or how it’s being shared by others. If you feel like there’s any chance that the picture could get into the wrong hands, don’t risk it, don’t share or post it.

Please remember, if someone does happen to use your private messages or photos in an inappropriate way or in a way that makes you uncomfortable, like showing others without consent, it is NOT YOUR FAULT, even if you send them willingly.

HAPPY V-DAY! 💗🧡💗

As we all know, Valentines Day is a celebration of love. So, let’s take a moment to think about what REAL love should look like. A healthy relationship is built on strong communication, a respect for boundaries, and autonomy for all, even online.

A person who loves you will support your choices, listen to your voice, and respect your independence. Love should never involve control, pressure, fear, or harm.

REAL LOVE makes you feel safe, valued, and free to be yourself.

REAL LOVE RESPECTS.

Let’s all celebrate Valentines Day by being examples of what REAL love looks like.

One major aspect of healthy relationships is having autonomy, or the ability to be independent and act as your own individual. This includes having autonomy over your personal social media accounts.

This is why discussing social media boundaries, setting social media boundaries and respecting social media boundaries is so important in dating partnerships. Setting, following through, and respecting digital boundaries fosters trust in relationships/dating partnerships and often reduces anxiety related to social media use.

BLOCK EM’!

If someone is bugging you or talking to you in a way you don’t like, you can unfriend or block them. It does not matter if the person bothering you online is a complete stranger, or your dating partner, you deserve to feel safe in online spaces. Don’t hesitate or feel bad about protecting yourself!

If blocking does not work for you, talk to a trusted adult, or someone in your safe circle. You do not have to deal with digital harassment/abuse alone.

DIGITAL ABUSE CAN HAPPEN TO ANYONE!

Unwanted or threatening messages, cyber stalking, controlling what a person posts or likes, sending unwanted sexual/inappropriate photos or messages are all ways that abusers use social media and the internet to victimize and control their dating partners. This type of abuse is often accompanied by other types of abuse, but can live on it’s own. Either way, it is important to recognize that digital abuse IS abuse and can be equally traumatizing for the victim as any other type of abuse.

If you ever become a victim of digital abuse, please contact your local resources for help and support!

Think of it this way: When you’re hanging out online, it’s like being in your own room. But if you want privacy in your room, you can shut your door. Unfortunately, most websites, social media apps, or gaming devices come to you with the door wide open so that anybody, even creeps, can chat with you (EX: new IG map update). Location tracking/pinning on social media can also be used by internet creeps to find out where you are and who you are with. Dating partners can also use location services to gain power and control over where you are and who you are with. Be safe and check your privacy settings to make sure they match with your boundaries surrounding social media and relationships.
