While we are ready to help students facing major challenges, Red Oak is passionate about reaching them before this point. Our evidence-based Prevention Services range from Social Emotional Learning classes for elementary students in partnership with the YMCA, to developing healthy coping strategies with middle schoolers, to anti-vaping work in high schools.

While we know that this upstream approach is effective and evidence-based, insurance companies do not pay for these types of services, and that is why your support is vital.

💡December's Parenting Tip from Kelli Law, OCPSA💡

Holiday Edition!

The holidays are here, so let’s explore some quick ideas on how to make them less stressful and more joyful.
1. Keep the family informed of events and outings that will happen. Tell them where you’re going, how long it will take, what you as the parent or guardian expect and what they can look forward to. These actions can calm anxiety and help avoid meltdowns.
2. Schedules can change during holidays but try to keep some part of your routines consistent. Maintaining a normal bedtime and meals at similar times can help keep moods steady.
3. Finally, work to keep your emotions and stress in control. Children can sense and mirror your energy, so it's important to take care of yourself. Remember that you can say no to events and delegate responsibilities without guilt.

I know you've got this, and it doesn't have to be perfect! Happy holidays!

The best gift is a strong start for our youngest learners.

Did you know that 90% of brain development occurs before kindergarten? At Red Oak, we believe that the foundation for mental wellness must begin at a young age.

Red Oak’s Early Childhood Mental Health Specialists support children, teachers, and families in local preschools and early learning centers.

$50 pays for a 30 minute consultation for a parent or guardian with an Early Childhood Mental Health Specialist.

Any amount you give helps us continue our mission to empower students and those who support them.

While professional therapy is critical, sometimes a student just needs a consistent, caring adult presence; a champion in their corner.

Red Oak's ICARE Mentoring program pairs students with trained volunteer mentors who provide guidance, build confidence, and help young people discover their strengths. These aren't just casual hangouts; they are intentional relationships that prevent isolation and connect students to a safe and trusted adult in their community.

$50 pays for a background check for a mentor so we can keep children safe while not incurring costs for our volunteers.

$150 pays for supplies for a new mentor training so that we can ensure each mentor is fully equipped and ready to serve.

Any amount you give helps us continue our mission to empower students and those who support them.

Will you fund a child's champion?

💡This month's SEL tip comes from Red Oak's Manager of Prevention and SEL Services, Joli Oliver, OCPSA.

Reflect & Celebrate

Before you jump into the new year, take a moment to look back.
Set a timer for 10 minutes and write about:
1. Your proudest moments
2. Challenges you overcame
3. How you’ve grown emotionally
4. The Social Emotional Learning skills that helped you most (like managing emotions, empathy, or asking for help)

Then ask yourself:
What am I most proud of?
What would I like to strengthen next year?

Reflection builds self-awareness and sets the stage for growth. So take a deep breath, be honest, and celebrate YOU.
