Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper reminds us to watch out for and report Harmful Algal Blooms in our waterways - always important this time of year. EcoVerde Organics reminds you that one of the causes of HABs is the over use and incorrect use of fertilizers. When too much is used or is carelessly sprinkled on driveways and sidewalks, the excess fertilizer will be picked up by rain water and run into the storm sewers that flow directly into creeks, rivers, etc. without any pre-treatment to remove them or other contaminants. The nitrogen and phosphorus in these fertilizers then create conditions in the waterways that allow HABs to grow and thrive. If you use a thin (1/4" - 1/2") layer of compost on your lawn instead of fertilizer, the lawn will be able to hold moisture better, reduce run-off and thus reduce the formation of HABs. Call us today for more information or to buy compost!
Our team remains on the front lines of protecting the health of people and pets through monitoring and reporting Harmful Algal Blooms in WNY, but we need the community's help to do it.
