Good Morning Friends!!
Today I would like to discuss Cerebral Palsy (CP).
Cerebral Palsy is a group of disorders that affect a person's ability to move and maintain balance and posture. CP is the most common motor disability in childhood. Cerebral means having to do with the brain and palsy means weakness problems with using the muscles.
Cerebral Palsy is caused by abnormal brain development or damage to the developing brain.
Doctors use brain imaging scans such as x-rays, CT scans, or MRIs and sometimes an EEG to test for Cerebral Palsy.
Cerebral Palsy is generally diagnosed during the first or second year after birth.
People with Cerebral Palsy have problems with movement and posture some have intellectual disabilities, seizures and abnormal physical sensations or perceptions. They can also have impaired vision or hearing and language and speech problems.
There are 5 major stages of CP. Spastic, ataxic, athetoid, hypotonic, and mixed typed.
People diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy can live a long life. There is no cure for Cerebral Palsy.
Signs to watch for in infancy and preschool years are: impaired movement with exaggerated reflexes, floppiness or spasticity of the limbs and trunks, unusual posture, involuntary movements and unsteady walking.
If you or someone you know has any questions about cerebral Palsy speak with your health care professionals.
