Your kidneys play an important role in keeping your body healthy. They help flush toxins and maintain the right balance of sodium (salt), potassium, and fluids. When the kidneys are not working properly, excess salt or fluid can place added stress on them.
The most common causes of kidney disease are diabetes and high blood pressure, and individuals with a family history of kidney problems may also be at higher risk.
Watch for possible symptoms:
- Changes in urination (less urine, frequent nighttime urination, or stopping completely)
- Swelling in the ankles, feet, or legs
- Decreased appetite
- Fatigue
- High blood pressure
- Nausea or vomiting lasting several days
- Decreased sensation, especially in the hands or feet
If you experience any of these symptoms, consult your doctor to rule out kidney disease.
For those living with kidney disease, doctors may recommend dietary adjustments such as limiting potassium, fluids, protein, phosphorus, and salt depending on individual needs and stage of disease. Always consult your doctor before making changes to your diet or medications.
