The Haslinger Pediatric Palliative Care Center

The Haslinger Pediatric Palliative Care Center The Pediatric Palliative Care Center at Akron Children's Hospital aims to enhance the quality of life A terminal diagnosis is not required.

Pediatric palliative care focuses on children, prenatal to young adult, with complex, chronic or serious conditions and their families, enhancing quality of life in partnership with cure-directed care. Our specialized team of providers includes:pediatric palliative care physicians, advanced practice providers, nurse case managers, social workers, bereavement coordinator, a chaplain, child life specialists, expressive, physical and occupational therapists, psychologists, pharmacists, a dietitian and trained volunteers. This team works in collaboration with your child’s other health care providers and specialists, helping to provide seamless care coordination and communication, and aiding you in making informed choices about difficult medical decisions. Palliative care patients receive comprehensive, interdisciplinary care to control pain and other symptoms. Your child receives support for emotional, psychological, practical, spiritual, educational and developmental issues which may contribute to suffering or interfere with healing. Care is customized for each patient and family, by allowing you to choose from a variety of available services, according to your needs. When a child faces a chronic condition or a serious illness, families often feel as if life has become a roller coaster ride. Palliative care is here to provide support along the journey, no matter what the outcome may be. Even if your child is in a neonatal or pediatric intensive care unit, or in an acute care setting, she can benefit from the pain control, symptom management, care coordination, or additional family support offered through our program. We care for children with both cancer and non-cancer diagnoses such as leukodystrophy, congenital heart disease, cerebral palsy and mitochondrial disease. We have found our care to be most beneficial when we begin the journey with the family at the time of diagnosis and continue with them for as long as they may need. "A tracheostomy seems like an easy, no-brainer, almost “easy button” decision when your child is faced with airway obstruction and a progression of their condition. When the tracheostomy talk started to appear on our radar, I soon realized the decision for a tracheostomy was far more complicated than I had ever realized," shares Blair Young-Whitworth, a devoted mother, corporate professional, and passionate advocate for children with complex medical needs. She also contributes to the Courageous Parents Network blog. Read more of her story as she shares her family's decisions for their son, Bubba, who passed away at ten years old.

Over the past few years, this workshop has drawn significant interest at the TCF National Conference because many families find it incredibly beneficial for parents, grandparents, and siblings alike. We are excited to offer a panel of siblings from different backgrounds and experiences who will share their perspectives and answer questions in an effort to help families reopen the door to communication.

Parents and grandparents will have the opportunity to ask difficult questions—questions they may wish they could ask their surviving child(ren) directly. Listening to a panel of siblings can provide parents with valuable insight into what their surviving child(ren) may be thinking and feeling after the loss.

Presented by: Keith Singer whose sister, Lori, died in an automobile accident in 1998 while serving active duty in the United States Navy. Keith was 21 and away at college. Although attending TCF functions because his mom asked and in the belief it would make her happy, Keith talked with other bereaved siblings and came to realize that sharing his thoughts and experiences dealing with the death of his sister helped him and others. He is a Certified Grief Educator by David Kessler, He facilitates sibling meetings for his local chapter and has been presenting workshops at the national conference for the past 18 years.

Because of the generosity of the NEO Mustang Club, families in Snyder, Texas will now have more time when it matters most.

We’re honored to share the placement of a CuddleCot at Cogdell Memorial Hospital, where the care team had been actively seeking a way to provide this level of support to families in their community.

As Wendy, Patient Care Services Director of Obstetrics and Maternal Program Manager, shared, this gift “will be a tremendous blessing to the members of our community.”

We are so grateful to partner with compassionate donors and healthcare teams who are committed to ensuring families are given the time they need to hold, love, and say goodbye to their baby.
