The Haslinger Pediatric Palliative Care Center

The Haslinger Pediatric Palliative Care Center The Pediatric Palliative Care Center at Akron Children's Hospital aims to enhance the quality of life A terminal diagnosis is not required.

Pediatric palliative care focuses on children, prenatal to young adult, with complex, chronic or serious conditions and their families, enhancing quality of life in partnership with cure-directed care. Our specialized team of providers includes:pediatric palliative care physicians, advanced practice providers, nurse case managers, social workers, bereavement coordinator, a chaplain, child life specialists, expressive, physical and occupational therapists, psychologists, pharmacists, a dietitian and trained volunteers. This team works in collaboration with your child’s other health care providers and specialists, helping to provide seamless care coordination and communication, and aiding you in making informed choices about difficult medical decisions. Palliative care patients receive comprehensive, interdisciplinary care to control pain and other symptoms. Your child receives support for emotional, psychological, practical, spiritual, educational and developmental issues which may contribute to suffering or interfere with healing. Care is customized for each patient and family, by allowing you to choose from a variety of available services, according to your needs. When a child faces a chronic condition or a serious illness, families often feel as if life has become a roller coaster ride. Palliative care is here to provide support along the journey, no matter what the outcome may be. Even if your child is in a neonatal or pediatric intensive care unit, or in an acute care setting, she can benefit from the pain control, symptom management, care coordination, or additional family support offered through our program. We care for children with both cancer and non-cancer diagnoses such as leukodystrophy, congenital heart disease, cerebral palsy and mitochondrial disease. We have found our care to be most beneficial when we begin the journey with the family at the time of diagnosis and continue with them for as long as they may need. "Regardless of how the person died, their absence is a shock to the system. The way it feels to live in a world without this person is difficult to reconcile with the life that existed before. It’s hard to grasp that they won’t be standing in the kitchen when you arrive home," shares Eleanor Haley, M.S. Program Director and Co-Founder of www.whatsyourgrief.com. The finality of death is one of the harshest and most severe realities one must come to terms with after someone has died.

Register Now for Energized Toward Healing beginning February 5, 2026:
We invite parents who have lost a child to participate in our Thursday evening parent grief support series. Our hope is that the information and support from other parents will help to energize you toward healing. We know that every parent's experience with grief is different, but we want to offer other sources of experience and empathy to help along the way. Sharing our stories, our concerns, our issues and our adversity is one of the ways people have helped each other through grief. Coming together with other parents who have been there allows us the possibility of learning from each other. Of course, no one who attends is required to talk.

The group meets every other week for eight sessions from 7-9:00pm. This is a closed group designed to help create a community for bereaved parents only. We ask participants to commit to attending all eight sessions. Registration is required and there is no fee for this program. Scan the QR Code here or contact Denise Zehner at dzehner@akronchildrens.org.

"In a society that values stoicism and, on average, offers less than a week of bereavement leave—where prevailing yet inaccurate grief theories seem to prescribe "completion" after five stages—and where, for much of the 20th century, remaining connected to the deceased was seen as pathological, it's not surprising some might feel selfish for focusing on their grief," shares Eleanor Haley, Program Director and Co-Founder of www.whatsyourgrief.org. Learn more here on how grieving is essential and everyone grieves in a different way.

Grief is not selfish. In a world that discourages mourning, connecting, remembering, and loving those who are gone is one of love’s most selfless forms.
