ERU. Equine recurrent uveitis is a debilitating condition for both horses and their owners. It is an immune mediated condition affecting the uveal tract (iris, ciliary body, and choroid). It can lead to blindness and other complications such as glaucoma and cataracts. Because of the degree of pain, many horses will self traumatize and cause corneal ulceration. Collagen cross linking can greatly improve corneal healing. Once ulcers are completely healed, then the ERU must be managed with medication to suppress the immune response. However, if a horse continues to be painful as well as blind, the Equine care team must make a decision about the quality of life and potential for enucleation. Many horses adapt very well to being blind with the proper support and safety precautions put in place. Call the Equine team at 541 924 1700 for help with ERU.

23 years ago, we bought the old chev, so Mason's carseat could go in the back. The old girl never failed me in mud snow ice and too many patients to count. Both Mason and Madison grew up in this truck. Fast forward to the upgrade, almost 30 years in the making. And full circle, the purchase from cousin Brennan at power Chevrolet and Eric Elder installed the new vet box right down at Dads old shop, right where Dad stood and welded all those years ago. Grateful and blessed!

EPM in horses can mimic so many conditions. Please be aware of changes in your horses behavior and gait. The organism is sarcocystis which causes the condition EPM. it can look like lameness, stringhalt, or other neurologic syndromes. Please call right away with any change in your horse. It is easy to diagnose and treat and has a good prognosis when addressed early on in the course of disease. Rivers Edge Equine is here to help.
