In alchemy, when the ancients spoke of the seven planets, they were not referring merely to the physical celestial bodies in the sky. They were speaking in symbols, encoding deeper truths about the inner structure of man. They understood the principle of as above, so below, not as a poetic phrase, but as a fundamental law of correspondence. What exists in the heavens exists within the human being. The macrocosm is reflected in the microcosm.
Each planet represents a distinct force within the human psyche, an aspect of consciousness that governs specific functions of our inner world. These are not external influences alone, but internal powers that can be observed, understood, and ultimately mastered. Through working with these forces consciously, one gains greater control over their own nature, and through that mastery, begins the process of spiritual ascent, arriving at a deeper understanding of who and what they truly are.
The ancients perceived the heavens not as something separate from man, but as a mirror of the mind itself. Just as the sun and the planets influence the earth, shaping nature through cycles such as the four seasons, so too do the higher faculties within man shape his inner and outer experience. Thought, emotion, imagination, and will act as subtle forces that influence the physical body and the conditions of one’s life. In this way, the same order that governs the cosmos governs the individual. As above, so below is not only a statement about the universe, but a direct instruction pointing inward, revealing that the key to understanding reality lies within the structure of one’s own consciousness.
