Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Richard L. Uhl has been named Chair of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Albany Medical Center. Uhl served as interim chair of orthopedic surgery since it became a department in 2022, following 22 years as chief of the Division of Orthopedic Surgery.

Dr. Uhl focuses on hand and upper extremity care, as well as orthopedic trauma including carpal tunnel syndrome, wrist fractures, and complex upper-extremity trauma. Beyond his clinical role, Dr. Uhl is a professor of orthopedic surgery at Albany Medical College and has served as the residency program director for 26 years.

Beginning Monday, Dec. 15, visitor restrictions will be in place at all Albany Med Health System hospitals due to seasonal respiratory viruses. These temporary restrictions are intended to protect the health and safety of patients and the professionals who provide care.

Changes include restricting visits to inpatient areas by:
• Children under 12;
• Any visitor with respiratory or flu-like symptoms (fever, sore throat, cough, shortness of breath); and
• Only two visitors will be permitted at the patient’s bedside at a time.
