What are floaters? Floaters are small dark shapes that float across your vision. They can look like spots, threads, squiggly lines, or even little cobwebs. Most people have floaters that come and go, and they often don’t need treatment. Sometimes floaters can be a sign of a more serious eye condition. So if you notice new floaters that appear suddenly and don’t go away, it’s important to tell your eye doctor.

The Amsler grid is used to identify the presence of scotomas in a person’s visual field, indicating changes in the macular. The test is completed with one eye at a time and with glasses if the patient normally wears them. The grid is held 28-30cm away, and the patient is asked to look at the dot in the center of the grid. If a patient has macular degeneration, the lines may appear wavy or curved, or they may see a blank or dark area in the middle of the grid.

The two types of age related macular degeneration have different causes:

🟢 Dry: This type is most common. About 80% of those with AMD have the dry form. It’s exact cause is unknown, although both genetic and environmental factors are thought to play a role. This happens as the light-sensitive cells in the macular slowly break down, generally one eye at a time. The loss of vision in this condition is usually slow and gradual

🟢 Wet: Though this type is less common, it usually leads to more severe vision loss in patients than dry AMD. It is the most common cause of severe loss of vision. Wet AMD happens when abnormal blood vessels start to grow beneath the retina. They leak fluid and blood~hence the name wet AMD~ and can create a large blind spot in the center of the visual field.

Schools often carry out vision screenings for students, however this screening should not take the place of your child’s eye exam with their optometrist. Comprehensive eye exams can detect vision problem that school screenings may miss, giving parents peace of mind knowing their child is learning with the best possible vision is our goal here at Vine Vision.
