Meet Ashley Suah, MD, Assistant Professor of Surgery, Transplant Surgeon at University of Chicago Medicine.
Dr. Ashley Suah is a transplant surgeon and educator committed to advancing equitable access to lifesaving transplantation for Black patients and underserved communities. As one of only 13 Black female transplant surgeons nationwide, her work reflects both clinical excellence and a deep commitment to addressing disparities in care.
In her clinical practice, Dr. Suah performs complex abdominal transplant surgeries while also serving as a strong advocate for her patients. She prioritizes patient education, ensuring individuals and families understand their diagnosis, treatment options, and post-transplant care so they can make informed decisions throughout the transplant process.
Beyond the operating room, Dr. Suah is dedicated to medical education and mentorship. She actively supports the training and development of medical students, residents, and fellows, helping to strengthen the future of the transplant workforce.
Community engagement is a central part of Dr. Suah’s work. She partners with the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois and regularly visits community centers and churches on Chicago’s South Side to educate residents about kidney and liver health, disease prevention, and the lifesaving impact of organ donation. These efforts help bring trusted medical expertise directly into the community.
Dr. Suah emphasizes the importance of open dialogue and empowerment in healthcare. She encourages individuals to ask questions, learn the signs of kidney and liver disease, and feel confident navigating the transplant process. Through her presence, outreach, and advocacy, she helps build trust in healthcare systems and improves access to transplantation for Black communities.

"I am a donor mom. I donated my son’s organs after he died from a traumatic brain injury he sustained in an automobile accident. I had no knowledge of organ donation and transplantation prior to his death, but the organ procurement team nurse helped me through the process, and my son's organs improved the lives of several folks waiting, including an 11-year-old boy. In addition to being a rainbow in someone’s cloud, meeting his heart recipient helped me through my grief process. Organ donation changes and saves lives." – Carolyn, honoring her son, Jerrell. 💙💚 Donate Life Connecticut New England Donor Services- thank you for sharing this story.

In honor of Black History Month, we reflect on the nearly 43,000 Black donors to date who have generously given the gift of life. Their selfless acts are a testament to the power of community and the profound impact of giving. Currently, over 29,000 Black patients are waiting – this number represents lives on hold and families hoping for a second chance. Let's work together to close the gap and celebrate these lifesaving heroes by continuing to raise awareness of the importance of donation in our communities.

Donate Life America shared today that more than 130,000 people have registered their decision to become organ, eye and tissue donors through MyChart, the nation’s most widely used patient portal! DLA began its close collaboration with Epic MyChart in May 2025 to improve the donor registration experience. Patients have embraced this innovative and private pathway to resounding effect.
"Reaching more than 130,000 registrations is a monumental milestone and a source of hope for the more than 100,000 people in the United States currently waiting for a transplant. Every one of these registrations represents hope for patients on the national transplant waiting list." –David Fleming, President & CEO of Donate Life America 💙💚

Thank you Gift of Life Michigan for sharing this story.

"If you think doctors won’t work to save your life just because you signed up to be an organ donor, please come and talk to me. I was there with my son. I saw the doctors resuscitate my child several times. They had one goal: They wanted to save Emilio."

Emilio was a registered organ donor—a detail none of the doctors or nurses knew as they treated him before performing a 10-hour heart surgery to attempt to save the 24-year-old.

Read how Terra DeFoe, Emilio's mother, works to dispel the myth that doctors won’t make every effort to save your life: https://giftoflifemichigan.org/blog/myth-debunked-by-fact-doctors-work-to-save-your-life-if-youre-a-registered-organ-donor
