Domestic abusers frequently exploit the strong emotional bond between victims and their pets as a tool of control and intimidation. Many victims fear for their pets’ safety and welfare, which can cause them to delay or avoid seeking help. That's why programs like Mohawk Hudson Humane Society Safe Haven, which provides housing & care for pets whose owners are trying to leave abusive partners, are so important! Yesterday we were so excited to be able to drop off a donation of pet supplies for this vital program. We would like to thank Daniel McCoy - Albany County Executive for his ongoing support of this project, as well as the many County departments that hosted collection bins or donated items. Together we can send a message that domestic violence survivors are not alone.

The Safe Haven Program, run by the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, provides foster homes for the pets of those who are victims of domestic violence. Today we delivered pet supplies and food collected by Albany County throughout October-Domestic Violence Awareness Month. In fact, the Albany County Crime Victim and Sexual Violence Center collected 5 bins full of dog and cat food, which is what the humane society identified as the greatest need!
