🚨 Carprofen Toxicity in Dogs 🚨
Carprofen (commonly known by brand names like Rimadyl, Carprovet, or Ostifen) is a medication often prescribed for pain and inflammation in dogs. While it can be helpful when used exactly as prescribed, carprofen can be toxic and even life-threatening if overdosed, given too frequently, or ingested accidentally, especially since they are such tasty tablets!
One of our dearest patients recently ingested an entire bottle of Carprofen, and thankfully their owner acted immediately. 🐾❤️
They sought emergency care right away, had their dog hospitalized, and then brought her to us for further evaluation and treatment. Because of the large amount ingested, we closely monitored her liver and kidney values, as Carprofen toxicity can cause serious and potentially life-threatening damage to these organs.
Careful and ongoing monitoring is critical in cases like this, and quick action made all the difference for this sweet girl.
Signs of carprofen toxicity may include:
• Vomiting or diarrhea (sometimes with blood)
• Loss of appetite
• Lethargy or weakness
• Increased thirst or urination
• Jaundice (yellowing of gums/eyes)
• Seizures or collapse
❗ Never give human pain medications to dogs, and always store pet meds securely many cases of toxicity happen when dogs get into pill bottles.
If you suspect your dog may have ingested carprofen improperly, seek veterinary care immediately. Early treatment can save lives.
