As we all enjoy this wintry mess today, we strongly encourage you to take a few extra minutes to prepare yourself for walking outside. Adult falls are the #1 cause of injury nationwide, year after year. Here are some great tips to help stay on your feet:
>Have your outside surfaces treated.
>Use handrails where available.
>Walk slowly and take smaller steps-“Walk Like a Penguin.”
>Keep your hands free.
>Pay attention.
>Wear appropriate footwear.
If you can stay off the roads, please do so. Stay warm, stay on your feet and stay safe as we wrap up 2025.

Today is National Injury Prevention Day, a day we take a pause and think about how we keep our communities safe.

Across the country businesses, government offices and first response agencies are turning their building lights and electronic signs green to show their support. If your place of work can go green, we’d love to see it, comment with a photo if you can!

Albany Med Adult Injury Prevention will be working with the NYS Bureau of Occupational Health and Injury Prevention manning booths today at the Capital Plaza Concourse, near the Corning Tower. We’ll have great information to help keep you, your friends and families safe. Stop on by, say hi and show your support!

How about a glance at your phone while driving?

This Fall, the Adult Trauma Program brought the Impact Teen Drivers program to Whitehall High School and Chatham High School, reaching almost 500 students with one powerful message:
Reckless and distracted driving is 100% preventable. Every choice behind the wheel matters. Every distraction could be lethal.
Let’s keep the conversation going—because saving lives starts with awareness.

Our next Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) course that is open to the Region will be held on October 22 and 23 of 2025, here at Albany Med. This course is open to Physicians and APP’s. We will fill this course quickly so if you are interested, please reach out to the email listed on the flyer to get your registration form.

Your Albany Med Injury Prevention Outreach Team was pleased to present the acclaimed Stop The Bleed program to the Herkimer County Rescue Heroes Summer Day Camp. This program is designed for Females ages 14-17 and gives them an opportunity to learn about potential careers in first response in areas such as fire, law enforcement, EMS and 911 dispatch. We were fortunate to have a special guest instructor in attendance, Firefighter/Paramedic Meg Delaney of the City of Amsterdam Fire Department, who, as a strong Female role model in Fire/EMS, was able to answer a LOT of the campers questions. We look forward to working with this great event every year and we thank Herkimer County BOCES for the invitation and continued partnership!

Our Adult Injury Prevention & Outreach team, brought Impact Teen Drivers, “What Do You Consider Lethal?” to Ichabod Crane High School’s driver’s ed class to spark a life-saving conversation.

Every day, teens lives are lost due to distracted and reckless driving. We’re on a mission to change that… one school, one class, one teen at a time. 💛

Learn Stop The Bleed and buy your patient time to get to your regional Trauma Center. Reach out to us to schedule a free training event for your group. Did you know that 1 out of 4 Americans over the age of 65 fall every year, resulting in the #1 cause of traumatic injuries nationwide?

Your Albany Med Injury Prevention Outreach Team was at it again, delivering the acclaimed “On Your Feet and Independent” Adult fall prevention program to some great people at the Clifton Park Senior Community Center today.

We discussed the various risk factors associated with falls and how to mitigate those risks to live safer and more independent lives.

We are currently booking events for Senior Centers and Adult Living Facilities for the Fall, to help prevent the “fall.” Reach out to us if you’re interested in hosting one of these great events for your group!

As we head into the long 4th of July holiday weekend, we remind you all to be safe, so your celebrations don’t end up with an unplanned visit with your regional trauma care experts. Please read and share these important safety tips. Take care of yourselves and those around you, let’s turn the “100 deadliest days” into the “100 safest days!”

There’s a lot more to safe driving than how you drive. Having the proper fit inside your vehicle can make a big difference and help protect you and those around you. With CarFit, an educational program developed by AARP and the American Occupational Therapy Association, you’ll get information and resources on how you can enhance your safety in the driver’s seat.

Your Albany Med Injury Prevention Outreach Team in cooperation with the Albany Med Inpatient Occupational, Physical Therapy and Driver Rehab program were fortunate to be able to attend some great training these past few days. Two of our outstanding OT’s became nationally certified as CarFit Technicians and we now have a nationally certified CarFit Event Coordinator.

As such we are now able to plan and host our own events and train new technicians. This will allow us to expand our reach across our region and help make sure that our seniors are driving as safely as possible.
