I share a lot here, but some of my most helpful insights don’t always make it to social media.

In my newsletter, I go a little deeper, breaking down hormones, energy, gut health, and what’s actually driving the symptoms you may be feeling. I also share practical steps you can start implementing right away, along with updates from my practice.
If you’re looking for real answers (not just quick fixes), I’d love to stay connected with you there.

Do you wake up around 3 a.m. every night and can’t fall back asleep?

I hear this from patients all the time.

In this video, I explain some of the most common root causes of early morning awakenings, including cortisol imbalance, blood sugar crashes, hormone changes (especially during perimenopause), and chronic inflammation.

Waking up at 3 a.m. may be common, but it’s not normal. When we identify the root cause, sleep often improves dramatically.

Watch the video to learn more.

If this sounds like you, you can schedule an appointment at willkoopal.com to start getting to the root cause and sleeping better.

Spring is nature’s reset button.

While January gets all the attention, many cultures recognize spring as the true beginning when light returns, energy rises, and our bodies naturally shift toward renewal.

Winter’s cold and shorter days slow metabolism, encourage rest, and affect hormones like melatonin and cortisol. As daylight increases in spring, our circadian rhythms adjust, helping wakefulness, mood, digestion, and hormone balance naturally.

Functional medicine supports this seasonal reset by aligning lifestyle, nutrition, and sleep with these natural rhythms. Gentle detox, balanced meals, and mindful movement can help your body move from winter’s rest into spring’s energy and renewal.

Happy first day of spring!

Brain fog is one of the most common complaints I see, but it’s rarely just a brain problem.

In functional medicine, we look at the whole body to understand why the brain isn’t functioning optimally.

Brain fog can be connected to:
• Poor sleep
• Stress
• Diet and metabolic health
• Gut inflammation and microbiome imbalance
• Hormonal changes (thyroid, estrogen, progesterone)
• Environmental exposures like mold or toxins

Your brain is extremely sensitive to inflammation and imbalances happening elsewhere in the body.

That’s why addressing the root causes not just the symptoms often leads to major improvements in clarity, focus, and energy.

Watch the video to learn how gut health, hormones, inflammation, and lifestyle factors can all contribute to brain fog.

Spent the weekend at the MAPS Conference (Medical Academy of Pediatrics & Special Needs) with my wife learning from leaders in functional and integrative pediatrics.

Rates of autism, ADHD, allergies, and chronic illness in children continue to rise. Functional medicine looks deeper at factors like the gut microbiome, immune function, nutrition, and environmental exposures that may be contributing.

If you’re a parent who has been told “everything looks normal” but your child is still struggling, there may be another layer worth exploring.

I’m excited to begin integrating more pediatric functional medicine into my practice and helping families search for deeper answers.

Perimenopause and menopause don’t just affect reproduction, they also affect the brain, bones, metabolism, mood, and heart health.

In this video I explain what happens when estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone decline, the symptoms many women experience, and how bioidentical hormone replacement therapy may help when used safely and appropriately.

Many women start noticing symptoms up to 10 years before menopause, including:
• Hot flashes
• Insomnia
• Brain fog
• Anxiety
• Weight gain
• Vaginal dryness
• Loss of muscle tone

The key is proper testing, personalized care, and addressing lifestyle factors like sleep, stress, and nutrition alongside hormone therapy.

If you're struggling with perimenopause or menopause symptoms, there are options that may help you feel like yourself again.

Did you know your mental health is deeply connected to your physical health?

In my latest blog, I share how functional psychiatry looks beyond symptoms to address root causes like inflammation, gut health, nutrition, stress, and more.

Disclaimer: Information shared is for educational purposes only and is not medical advice.

Functional psychiatry goes beyond symptom management, uncovering root causes like stress, inflammation, gut health, and nutrition. If you’re looking for lasting wellness and want care that truly understands you, functional psychiatry offers a different path forward.

Most of us build our careers like everything depends on output.

More patients.
More programs.
More growth.
More impact.

But lately I’ve been reminded of something backwards-sounding… and completely freeing:
Your value isn’t tied to productivity.
Your family isn’t an interruption to the mission — they are the mission.
And the impact you hope to have usually starts in rooms too small to ever make social media.
The conversation at the dinner table.
The bedtime prayer you almost skipped because you were tired.
The patient who didn’t need a perfect protocol — just someone to actually listen.
I built this practice to help people heal.

But the longer I do this, the more I realize healing spreads the same way everywhere:
attention → presence → consistency
Not scale first.
Not hustle first.
People first.

So if you feel behind because life keeps “interrupting” your plans…
maybe those interruptions are the work.

March is Autoimmune Awareness Month

Did you know there are 100+ autoimmune diseases, including lupus, MS, and rheumatoid arthritis, where the immune system mistakenly attacks the body?

• Over 50 million Americans are affected
• Nearly 80% are women
• Symptoms often include fatigue, joint pain, skin issues, brain fog, digestive concerns, and more

Autoimmune conditions are often misunderstood, under-diagnosed, and under-researched. This month is about changing that through education, advocacy, and support for those living with chronic illness every day.

How you can help:
• Wear purple
• Share your story
• Help spread awareness for earlier, more accurate diagnoses

As a functional medicine provider, I believe in looking deeper and addressing root causes, supporting immune balance, and partnering with patients for long-term healing and quality of life. You are not alone. 💜

From a functional medicine lens, strength training isn’t about getting “bulky.”
It’s about metabolic health, hormone balance, and longevity.

Benefits of lifting weights:
• Improves blood sugar & insulin sensitivity
• Supports healthy hormones (yes, for all genders)
• Reduces chronic inflammation
• Builds bone density & joint resilience
• Boosts brain health, mood & stress tolerance
• Protects independence as we age

Your muscles are an endocrine organ. When you train them, they send powerful healing signals throughout the body.

Functional medicine tip:
2–3 sessions/week
Focus on compound movements
Prioritize recovery, protein, minerals & sleep
Strength is not just fitness, it’s preventive care.
Lift for your future self.

Protein builds the body.
Peptides tell it 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙩𝙤 𝙙𝙤.

Protein supplies the raw materials for muscle, skin, and tissue.
Peptides act as messengers—guiding repair, communication, and regulation.

When you support both 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴,
the body doesn’t just work harder—it works 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗿.
