Keynote Announcement – ADTA Virtual Spring Summit 2026

We are honored to announce Selena Coburn, BC-DMT, LMHC, LCPC as the Keynote Speaker for the 6th Annual ADTA Virtual Spring Summit.

Keynote Title:
Holding the Hard Conversations: Embodied Ethics for a Resilient Future

Selena Coburn is a board-certified dance/movement therapist, educator, and leader within the American Dance Therapy Association. She is a mental health and dance/movement therapist based in Great Falls, Montana, an Adjunct Professor at Lesley University, and an Associate Professor at Great Falls College Montana State University. A descendant of Blackfeet, Klamath, Cree, and Pitt River tribes, Selena brings a deeply grounded, culturally responsive, and embodied approach to ethics, leadership, and clinical practice.

A former ADTA Standards & Ethics Committee Chair, Selena continues to serve on the committee and has been a guiding voice in ethical discourse within the field. She is the founder of the Native American Affinity Group within the ADTA Multicultural & Diversity Committee and was honored with the ADTA Leader of Tomorrow Award (2020). Her work centers decolonizing dance as therapy, culturally inclusive processing, and the integration of cultural healing practices—particularly in her work with adolescents in residential treatment settings.

Through this keynote, Selena invites us into courageous, embodied dialogue—supporting therapists, educators, and leaders in navigating complexity with integrity, accountability, and resilience.

We Are the ADTA—and Our Words Matter.

As our field continues to grow, the American Dance Therapy Association is proud to share the newly adopted definition of dance/movement therapy—shaped through years of collective dialogue, scholarship, and lived expertise. This definition reflects who we are today: a body-based, culturally responsive, relationship-centered profession committed to creative processes that support healing and transformation.

Dance/Movement Therapy is defined by the ADTA as the psychotherapeutic use of dance, movement, body awareness, and embodied communication to foster healing and wellness for individuals, families, and communities.

Using a shared definition strengthens the visibility and integrity of our work. When we use consistent language across research, education, clinical practice, publications, and social media, we amplify our collective voice and help the public better understand the impact of dance/movement therapy.

✨ We invite everyone connected to the ADTA community to integrate this definition into your professional materials, syllabi, websites, and outreach efforts.

This is the heart of We Are the ADTA—together, we define who we are and support the continued growth of our field.

Call for Conference Proposals Open!
Tides of Change: Innovations in Dance/Movement Therapy

The American Dance Therapy Association (ADTA) invites proposals for its 61st Annual Conference, taking place November 5–8, 2026, in Long Beach, California.
This conference will be held on the traditional land of the Tongva (Gabrielino/Kizh) and Acjachemen (Juaneño) peoples. We acknowledge and honor their enduring relationship to this land and the wisdom carried through generations.

Conference Theme: Tides of Change: Innovations in Dance/Movement Therapy
As dance/movement therapy enters new horizons, we gather at the edge of shifting tides to explore how embodied wisdom meets emerging technologies. This conference invites participants to engage with cutting-edge research on dance/movement, presence, and healing, while critically and creatively reflecting on the role of artificial intelligence and digital innovation in shaping therapeutic practice.

From the intimacy of virtual therapy to the expansiveness of shared physical space, ADTA61 looks toward the future as a confluence of possibilities—each current carrying innovation, resilience, ethics, and connection. Together, we chart new constellations of care, bridging ancestral rhythms with contemporary tools, and discovering how the currents of change can guide us into the expansive waters of dance/movement therapy.

We invite proposals that explore, but are not limited to:
--Innovations in dance/movement therapy theory, research, and clinical practice
--Embodied ethics, presence, and relational attunement in changing contexts
--Artificial intelligence, technology, and virtual modalities in therapy and supervision
--Cultural humility, decolonizing practices, and ancestral knowledge systems
--Interdisciplinary approaches and cross-sector collaboration
--Education, training, supervision, and leadership in evolving professional landscapes
--Community-based, collective, and social justice–oriented DMT practices

Proposals may include research presentations, experiential workshops, panels, roundtables, and other formats aligned with ADTA conference guidelines.

Important Dates
Call for Proposals Opens: January 12, 2026
Call for Proposals Closes: February 23, 2026

Submit your proposal and review full guidelines at: https://loom.ly/jpgqXgk

We invite you to lend your voice, movement, and vision as we navigate the tides of change together and imagine the future of dance/movement therapy.

Meet a Board Director: Robyn Flaum Cruz (she/her)

Albuquerque, NM
ADTA Member since 1979 (first conference in 1973!)
Board Role: Western Member-at-Large

Robyn Flaum Cruz brings decades of wisdom, service, and heart to the American Dance Therapy Association. Having served the ADTA in many roles over the years—including AJDT Co-Editor, Vice President, President, and Past President—we are grateful for Robyn's continued leadership in the field and with the ADTA.

As Western Member-at-Large, Robyn prioritizes supporting ADTA chapters, recognizing that they ebb and flow as members step forward to lead while navigating life’s challenges. Chapters, she emphasizes, are vital spaces for connection, sharing, and mutual energizing across the country.

Dance continues to be a meaningful presence in Robyn’s life. After the loss of her life partner in 2024, she began studying social dances such as West Coast swing and tango—approaching dance as a place for enjoyment, experimentation, and resilience. A self-described collaborator at heart, she finds meaning in continuing to try, especially through movement.

Something you might not know about Robyn: it’s hard for her to imagine life without a dog.

We are the ADTA—and Robyn’s lifelong dedication reminds us how service, movement, and community intertwine.
