January is Substance Use Awareness Month, and we’re highlighting the real, lifesaving work happening every day at Alliance for Positive Health. 💙

Meghan O’Connor, our Overdose Prevention Specialist, shares why harm reduction matters, how naloxone saves lives, and what each of us can do to help prevent overdoses in our community.

Substance use doesn’t define a person. Compassion, education, and access save lives.

At Alliance for Positive Health, our work has always been grounded in dignity, compassion, and care for every person in our community.

There are moments when many are carrying extra weight — uncertainty, fear, or quiet grief that doesn’t always have a name. In those moments, it matters to be reminded that care exists, that support is real, and that no one has to navigate life’s challenges alone.

Our commitment remains unchanged: to offer judgment-free care, to protect access to services, and to create spaces where people feel safe seeking support. Health and humanity are at the center of everything we do.

If you or someone you love needs support, connection, or care, we are here. Today, tomorrow, and always.

Reminder!

*UPDATE* In anticipation of the approaching weather, IPH's Community Connections drop-in center will be closed on Monday, January 26. Instead, IPH's Safe Haven shelter will remain open all day Monday at 26 S. Swan Street.

***
As a major snow and ice storm approaches this weekend, we're thinking about our neighbors who don't have a safe, warm place to go. Extreme cold can quickly become life-threatening for people facing homelessness, making access to shelter not just important, but essential.

If you or someone you know needs a safe place to stay this weekend:
❄ Safe Haven (Albany) is open nightly from 4:30pm-8:30am at 26 S. Swan Street - no referral needed.
❄ Danielle's House (Amsterdam) is open. Visit the Montgomery County Department of Social Services at 1 Venner Road in Amsterdam to get a referral.

For anyone looking to help: weather emergencies like this increase the demand for shelter, meals, and supplies. Your support helps keep our doors open when our community needs it most.

Please share this information widely, and if you're able, consider donating to help IPH keep our unhoused neighbors safe through the storm. 💙

Due to weather conditions, all of our offices will be closed tomorrow, Monday, January 26. Our team will be working remotely and continuing to support clients as needed. Please stay warm and safe ❄️

Heavy snow and dangerous cold are expected in Albany from Sunday through Monday.

Snow will begin Sunday afternoon, peak Sunday night, and continue into Monday evening, with 10 to 18 inches possible. Wind chills could reach 25 below zero. Please limit travel unless absolutely necessary.

What to do
• Stay indoors if possible
• Charge phones and essential devices
• Use CDTA instead of driving, service is running and Code Blue provides fare-free rides to shelters
• Protect pipes, extreme cold increases the risk of frozen lines
• Check on neighbors, especially seniors and newcomers

What not to do
• Do not use a gas stove to heat your home
• Keep space heaters at least 3 feet from anything flammable

Help for unhoused residents
• Walk-in shelters:
• Capital City Rescue Mission, 259 South Pearl Street
• Safe Haven Drop-In Center, 26 South Swan Street
• APD CART teams are conducting proactive outreach
• Joseph’s House Outreach Services: 518-495-0663
• HATAS Homeless Hotline: 518-463-2124

Important numbers
• Emergency: 9-1-1
• Loss of heat or non-emergency: 518-438-4000
