๐Ÿ’œ World Cancer Day ๐Ÿ’œ

Today, we honor every individual whose life has been touched by cancer.

In the Cancer Services Program, our mission is simple but powerful: to ensure that every person has access to life saving cancer screenings, support, and education no matter their circumstances.

To our partners, providers, and the communities we serve thank you for walking beside us, spreading awareness, and helping us break down barriers to care.

On this World Cancer Day, letโ€™s recommit to reaching every New Yorker with the message that help is here, hope is here, and no one faces cancer alone.

An alarming study was released by the American Cancer Society and JAMA last week which shows that colore**al cancer is now the LEADING cause of cancer deaths in Americans under 50.

Colore**al cancer is preventable, and highly treatable when detected early โ€” often up to a 90% survival rate if caught at stage I.

But younger adults tend to be diagnosed later because:

โš ๏ธ They may dismiss symptoms
โš ๏ธ Providers may not initially suspect cancer
โš ๏ธ Screening traditionally began at older ages

Many of these individuals have no family history or obvious risk factors.

SO, WHAT ARE SOME SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS I SHOULD BE AWARE OF?

๐Ÿ‘‰ Persistent change in bowel habits
๐Ÿ‘‰ Narrow or pencil-thin stools
๐Ÿ‘‰ Diarrhea or constipation
๐Ÿ‘‰ Blood in the stool, re**al bleeding (blood may appear as bright red blood or dark stools)
๐Ÿ‘‰ Persistent abdominal pain or discomfort, such as cramps or bloating
๐Ÿ‘‰ Feeling that your bowel doesn't empty completely
๐Ÿ‘‰ Unexplained weight loss
๐Ÿ‘‰ Fatigue, tiredness, or weakness

We are so grateful for our amazing partnership with CDL!

Their commitment to raising awareness about colore**al cancer and promoting screening is truly inspiring.

Together, weโ€™ve completed 10 FIT kits in the past monthโ€”thatโ€™s 10 lives potentially saved because early detection is the key to better outcomes.

AND how excited were we to see our information proudly featured on CDL's lobby display! This kind of visibility helps spread the word about our life-saving program and bring it to those most in need.

Our community outreach coordinator and the team from the Fulton/Montgomery/Schenectady CSP were honored to meet with Congressman Paul Tonko on Monday to share the incredible work our program is doing right here in the counties he represents. His support for our program means so much to usโ€”and to the areas we mutually serve. Together, weโ€™re building stronger, healthier communities and making a real difference in peopleโ€™s lives.

๐ŸŒˆ Every Life Matters ๐ŸŒˆ

Did you know:

๐ŸŒˆ LGBTQ+ people face barriers to high-quality health care, including discrimination and limited provider knowledge of their unique health needs

๐ŸŒˆ Transgender people are less likely to be screened for cervical, colore**al and prostate cancer

๐ŸŒˆ Some LGBTQ+ populations are more likely to have cancer risk factors, including cigarette smoking, heavy alcohol use and excessive body weight

๐ŸŒˆ The cancer burden for LGBTQ+ people is unknown because data on sexual orientation and gender identity are not routinely collected in health care settings

(American Cancer Society...Key Facts about cancer in LGBTQ+ people)

Join us tomorrow for an impactful day where community comes together to share life-saving information and resources. All are welcome. We hope to see you there!
