Rolling with yamana balls, foam rollers and the like can be a great supplement (and even occasionally a substitution) for good massage. You the client have the best feedback system for what pressure is needed and the best awareness when it's to much. Gravity, time and some precision placement can make a huge difference in how you feel in your body.

I've been able to do some of the deepest most effective work I've ever gotten on my hip aductor muscles with a standard 6" white foam roller.

And if you need someone else to do the work for you, your local massage therapist will likely be happy to help out :)

As of 11/16/20 California has moved a bunch of our local counties back to Purple level of threat/concern regarding COVID19.

At first, I assumed this meant all "Personal Services" would be shut down again. I was wrong! Back on 10/20/20 the state (I assume after looking at the transmission data) designated Personal Services to be safe enough to do indoors with modifications at all tiers (Yellow-Orange-Red-Purple). Currently, Alameda county hasn't instituted a more strict guideline than the state guidelines.

I'll continue to be following the guidelines for safer treatments during the pandemic. maximizing airflow, controlled entry, air filtration, sanitation of surfaces with hospital grade viracides, contact-less temperature check, symptom checks, travel/pod/contact guidelines, longer turn times between clients and full linen resets between all clients.

Stay safe folks, and I look forward to seeing you either soon or after we're on the other side of this!

Currently, all counties are open for outdoor massage in California. And Alameda county (where my office is) has allowed indoor massage (with appropriate precautions) to reopen.

Some safety precautions being used in both types of massage:

a) sanitizing gear/surfaces with citrus 2, a hospital grade viracide
b) client and therapist masked at all times
c) health/risk screen prior to appointments
d) all linens including blankets laundered after ever client

Outdoors: While I have a sunshade and a portable table, the airflow you get from an outdoor space is amazing. Portable privacy walls on two sides of the sunshade allow some modesty without impeding airflow significantly. I also have a table heater for cooler days/evenings.

Indoors:
a) window fans to move significant air between clients (flushing the space for over 20 minutes with full force fans)
b) temperature (contactless) checks before building entry
c) controlled and limited entry to building
d) air purifiers running in common spaces and a massive purifier running in my room (built for 540sqft room vs my 150sqft room)

None of these things reduce the risk to zero, but I'm trusting my governing bodies and the county health officers to guide us through safe procedures as we are allowed to open back up. My personal talisman in these chaotic days is the story about the two NC hairdressers who saw 147 clients while covid positive, and because they and their clients were masked, they had zero transmissions of the virus.

So...doing our best to stay safe and be of service!

As of tomorrow (8/28/2020) The only massage that is allowed in Marin, Alameda or Contra Costa County is outdoor massage.

If your favorite massage therapist doesn't have an outdoor space available you might find out if they'll come to you? If you don't have a suitable outdoor space, ask a friend or neighbor about the use of their yard!

I've written about this before in other locations, but I'll run through it again.

Why should you have to pay a late cancellation feed for a massage you never got? You pay for massages right? and if you don't get the massage...why should you pay for a massage you didn't get?

From my perspective as a relatively busy massage therapist: you're not paying me for massage. You're paying for a block of my time, during which time I will endeavor to give you the best massage I can.

If you choose not to show up for that time, you still used it. If you showed up 15 minutes late would you ask to pay for a 45 minute massage? Or would you assume that you needed to pay for the full 60 minutes you had booked? What if you showed up 30 minutes late? If not showing up for the first 10 minutes of your massage doesn't mean you aren't accountable for that time....why would not showing up for the whole hour be any different?

Here is why most of us use a 24hr cancellation policy: with less than 24 hours notice, it is extremely likely that I won't be able to fill you appointment slot with another client. I'll likely spend anywhere from 30minutes to two hours trying to find a client/clients to fill the time slot. I don't get paid for that time, and with less than 24 hours notice I'm likely to spend that time and still not fill the slot.

Now, why is it that we don't do that thing where we say "Well, I won't charge you the late cancellation fee if I'm able to fill the slot". The reasoning there (for me) is thus: I never want my client wondering if I'm secretly screwing them over, did I fill the slot and lie to you about it? Did I "double dip" at your expense? I never want there to be a question, so how I resolved this is I offer the same 24hr policy in reverse to my clients that I ask them to give me. If I cancel your massage with less than 24 hours notice, I'll send you a check for the full amount of the scheduled massage. I won't ask if you were able to get a massage somewhere else :)

One of those odd things they don't teach you in massage school: What do you do if you have a small cut or open wound on your hands that doesn't interfere in your ability to do massage?

What do you do if a client as a skin condition that you don't want to be in skin to skin contact with?

The answer is well fitted nitrile or latex gloves. There is some loss of sensation (doing the work) and a slight change in slip/grip vs your ungloved hands, but generally speaking, you should be able to provide a nearly identical experience for your client while insuring a safe and sanitary space.

Every Massage Therapist I know has a referral list. Hairdresser, chiropractor, Physical trainer or a physical therapist we probably know someone. Always happy to help our clients connect with other great service providers :)

There is always a challenge for therapists and clients alike when dealing with illnesses.

Some viruses come on quick, and some you think are long gone when they surprise you with another round.

Generally speaking, most massage therapists don’t want to work on you when you’re sick, both for their health and because getting a massage while sick can make things even worse for you.

One of the joys of Medpay (an insurance rider you might have on your auto insurance) is that it will pay for acupuncture, chiropractic, medical co-pays, and massage with no questions asked when you've been in an accident.

I recently got rear ended, and while the two massages I've had have helped, I'm sure I'll be needing another session or two of bodywork to finally get everything settled.
