Changes to SNAP Benefits Starting January 1

Beginning January 1, 2026, under Indiana’s new “Smart SNAP” initiative, sugary drinks and candy will no longer be eligible for purchase with SNAP benefits. Sugary drinks are defined as non-alcoholic beverages with natural or artificial sweeteners. Drinks with milk or milk substitutes, such as soy or rice, don’t count, and neither do drinks exclusively sweetened with real fruit or vegetable juice.

That means soda, energy drinks, sports drinks like Gatorade, and sweetened iced tea are banned from SNAP use, but unsweetened iced tea, fruit juice, or electrolyte replacement drinks like Pedialyte are still covered.

Candy is defined as a preparation of sugar, honey, or other sweeteners combined with chocolate, nuts, fruit, or flavorings — not including products that require refrigeration.

Candy bars, marshmallows, fruit strips, sugared popcorn, and mints meet the definition, but ice cream, fruit itself, and potato chips are still allowed.
