It is with great sadness that we announce that Barbara Forrest passed away. Barbara was a lifelong, selfless giver of her time and energy to causes that strengthened families and communities. Her greatest calling began when her son, Gary Don Forrest, was born in 1963 with Down syndrome. With two other precious boys in the home, Barbara committed herself wholeheartedly to raising her sons in the best way she knew possible, with love, determination, and unwavering faith. She worked with many community groups that supported families with children with special needs and became a strong advocate for ensuring those families were not alone on their journey.

After searching for services and finding that no place existed locally that provided children with special needs a formal education, Barbara and her husband, Bob Forrest, took action. Together, they founded CARC INC NM to create opportunities where none existed. What began as a small school quickly became a place of learning, growth, and purpose.

At CARC, children did not just learn to read, write, and count. They learned practical life skills that built confidence and independence. They learned woodwork, how to garden, how to gather eggs from chickens that remained from the New Mexico Bird Farm, and how to harvest and process pecans, a program that continues to provide meaningful work opportunities for individuals we serve today. These experiences taught responsibility, pride in their work, and the belief that they were capable of contributing in meaningful ways.

Together, Barbara and Bob Forrest created more than a school. They created a place of hope, opportunity, and belonging for individuals with special needs and their families. Their vision, compassion, and determination built the foundation of CARC, and their legacy continues to live on in the lives of those we serve each day.

We are deeply grateful for Barbara and Bob’s leadership, their servant hearts, and their unwavering commitment to this community. Their impact will never be forgotten, and their example will continue to guide us as we carry their mission forward. Memorial contributions may be made to CARC, Inc., 902 W. Cherry Lane, Carlsbad, NM 88220.

NMHCA/NMCAL was proud to have our Senior Director of Member Services, Tracy Alter, representing long-term care at Senior Day at the Roundhouse! Senior Day at the Roundhouse brings together older adults, advocates, providers, and community partners from across New Mexico to engage with legislators and highlight the issues that matter most to seniors. It’s an important opportunity to elevate the voices of aging New Mexicans and to discuss policies that impact senior services, healthcare access, and long-term care across our state.
