Congratulations to NMNPC President Shawnna Read!

We are proud to share that Shawnna Read, MSN, ACNP-BC, FNP-BC, President of the New Mexico Nurse Practitioner Council, has been published in Health Affairs Forefront for her article “The Marketplace Illusion: Coverage Without Care.” This important piece examines how health insurance marketplaces may create the appearance of coverage but still leave gaps in meaningful access to care — a critical issue in health policy today.

Shawnna’s leadership, clinical experience, and advocacy continue to elevate discussions around access to high-quality care, particularly for underserved communities throughout New Mexico.

Please join us in congratulating her on this well-deserved recognition! 🩺👏

A functioning Marketplace should look like your local grocery store: a variety of options that meet population needs and real-world demand.

Kate Goldblum, MSN, RN, FNP (Ret.), has been selected as a recipient of the 2026 AANP State Award for Outstanding Contributions—an honor that reflects more than three decades of extraordinary service to patients, nurse practitioners, and our profession.

Kate was among New Mexico’s first clinical nurse specialists in medical-surgical nursing in 1990 and later became a Family Nurse Practitioner in 1997. Over the course of her career, she made exceptional contributions across multiple domains of practice, education and advocacy. In the specialty field of ophthalmology, she provided expert care—often at no cost to patients—authored ophthalmology textbooks and educational materials, and served on ophthalmology-related boards, helping elevate advanced practice nursing within this highly specialized area of care.

Her leadership within NMNPC has been transformative. As Chair of the Education Committee, she reshaped conference programming, expanded clinical content, including acute care tracks, increased attendance and helped establish both spring and fall conferences to better serve NPs statewide. Even in retirement, she continues to give back as NMNPC’s webmaster, ensuring our organization remains accessible and connected.

Kate has also played a critical role in regulatory and policy work, serving on the New Mexico Board of Nursing committees and actively participating in BON rulemaking to strengthen continuing education standards and address regulatory gaps impacting NP practice.

Member Spotlight: Gloria Doherty, PhD, ACNP-BC

Gloria is the February Member in the Spotlight from Region 5. She first joined NMNPC as a student but did not continue her membership because her focus was on acute care. Gloria subsequently renewed her membership, and “way back when,” Kate Goldblum encouraged Gloria to run for NMNPC President Elect, which she did. Following her year as President Elect, Gloria served as President from 2015-2017 and has remained active in some capacity since then. She believes our professional organization is imperative in maintaining and creating state policies to ensure protection of full practice authority for nurse practitioners (NPs) and that we identify and remove barriers to care across the state.
