Our Approach

Small Steps Child Counseling, LLC provides our youngest members of society and their families with specialized clinical mental health care. Our approach focuses on helping children develop healthy neurological and psychological functioning as well as healthy relationships and resiliency. So much of the latest research on the brain has proven that healthy attachment and early mental health intervention can impact a person’s life in almost every way: relationships with others, life decisions, physical health, academic functioning and future family dynamics. Small Steps is motivated to reach younger children at a time of life when neurological and psychological functioning is the most impressionable and relationships between caregivers and children can be enhanced to have the most powerful impact on the mental and physical health of that child. Our approach serves not only children, but their parents and caregivers as well:

For young children in unhealthy situations, we provide a range of mental health counseling styles to help children succeed and move on to become healthy, full functioning adults. For parents and caregivers we inform and empower through psycho-education, training, listening and recognizing strengths. Small Steps works to help parents succeed in relationship with their children. Contact Us

Sometimes we get it wrong.
We snap, we rush, we misunderstand.
That doesn’t mean we’ve failed — it means we’re human.

What matters most isn’t never losing our temper…
It’s showing our kids what repair looks like.

A deep breath. An apology.
A moment of connection after disconnection.
That’s where real emotional safety is built. 🤍

✨ “You can repair a moment. It’s never too late.”
If today was hard, remember — there is always a chance to reconnect.

THE GROUNDING TECHNIQUE

Today’s visual shares one of the simplest, most effective tools for helping a child come back into their body when anxiety, overwhelm or dysregulation takes over.

Grounding works because it brings the brain out of “threat mode” and back into the present moment — a key part of brain-based parenting and co-regulation.

Young people often tell us that having something practical to do in the moment makes big feelings feel less scary and more manageable.

You can use this strategy at home, in school, during transitions, or any time a child feels “stuck” in their emotions.

If you’d like a downloadable copy of this tool — plus a full range of calming strategies — you’ll find them inside our evidence-based toolkits.
Find them via the link in comments below ⬇️ or via Linktree Shop in Bio.

When kids fall apart emotionally, our instinct is often to correct the behaviour, remove privileges, or “snap them out of it.”

But in those moments, the part of the brain responsible for logic, learning and self-control is offline.

Before they learn, they need to feel safe.
Before they can regulate, they need to borrow our calm.

That’s where Emotional First Aid comes in.

💛 Sit close
💛 Use a soft voice
💛 Offer empathy
💛 Stay regulated yourself
💛 Let solutions come after connection

Because the strongest lessons don’t happen during the storm —
they happen after the child feels seen, safe and supported.
