Today in History ….

President Abraham Lincoln signed the 13th Amendment February 1, 1865

This amendment, outlawing slavery and involuntary servitude, was the first substantive change to America’s conception of its liberties since the Bill of Rights was ratified in 1791. After signing the original resolution on February 1, Lincoln responded to a serenade, and to questions about the legality of the Emancipation Proclamation and prior efforts to eradicate slavery, by saying that the amendment “is a king’s cure for all the evils. It winds the whole thing up.”

January is Cervical Health Awareness Month

Cervical Health Awareness Month is a chance to raise awareness about howwomen can protect themselves from HPV (human papillomavirus) and cervicalcancer. HPV is a very common infection that spreads through sexual activity. It’s also a major cause of cervical cancer.

About 79 million Americans currently have HPV. Many people with HPV don’t know they are infected. And each year, more than 11,000 women in the United States get cervical cancer.
The good news?

• The HPV vaccine (shots) can prevent HPV.
• Cervical cancer can often be prevented with regular screening tests (called Pap tests)and follow-up care.

Cervical cancer screenings can help detect abnormal (changed) cells early, before they turn into cancer. Most deaths from cervical cancer could beprevented by regular Pap tests and follow-up care.
In honor of National Cervical Health Awareness Month, FCCH encourages:

• Women to start getting regular Pap tests at age 21
• Parents to make sure pre-teens get the HPV vaccine at age 11 or 12

National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week® (NDAFW) is a national health observance for teens to promote local events that use NIDA science to SHATTER THE MYTHS® about drugs.

National Drug & Alcohol Facts WeekSM links students with scientists and other experts to counteract the myths about drugs and alcohol that teens get from the internet, social media, TV, movies, music, or from friends. It was launched in 2010 by scientists at the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) to stimulate educational events in communities so teens can learn what science has taught us about drug use and addiction. The National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism became a partner starting in 2016, and alcohol has been added as a topic area for the week. NIDA and NIAAA are part of the National Institutes of Health.

Folic acid is a B-vitamin that is necessary for proper cell growth.
If taken before and during early pregnancy, folic acid can prevent up to 70% of some serious birth defects of the brain and spine, called neural tube defects.

The CDC and the U.S. Public Health Service recommend that all women between the ages of 15 and 45 consume 400 micrograms (mcg) of folic acid daily to prevent two types of neural tube defects, spina bifida and anencephaly. Since these birth defects develop within the first few weeks of pregnancy, it is important to have enough folic acid in your body BEFORE becoming pregnant and to continue getting enough folic acid during early pregnancy. Women need folic acid even if they are not planning to become pregnant since almost half of all pregnancies in the United States are unplanned.

Women who could possibly become pregnant can consume 400 mcg of folic acid every day by:

•taking a daily multi-vitamin containing folic acid, and
•eating fortified foods like grains, pastas, or breakfast cereals.
