Welcome to Nirguna Yoga School, Albuquerque’s home for in-depth yoga study, continuing education, and Yoga Alliance–registered teacher training. Our unique program offers a flexible, affordable, and inspiring way to grow — whether you’re preparing to teach or simply ready to explore yoga’s deeper dimensions.

Every module at Nirguna Yoga School functions both as a stand-alone workshop and as part of a complete teacher-training pathway. You can join for a single weekend to enrich your practice, or collect modules to become a certified yoga teacher.

The upper spine is the hardest area of the spine to gain flexibility. We protect our hearts in so many ways. Cracking it open, even if just a little bit, feels like heaven. Once we step off the mat, the challenge is keeping it open the rest of the day.

I had the blessing of getting a private Pilates class with Maureen a few days ago and I’ve been working hard, trying to incorporate even just a sliver of the knowledge she gave me into my own practice! She teaches Hot Vinyasa every Monday at 4:30pm! Her classes offer so much of the deep seated core strength that you find in Pilates. Come practice with Maureen today!!

Look who’s teaching 26&2 on Friday mornings!!
So happy to have Abby back!

Abby Brandow is an Albuquerque native who began her yoga journey in 2007 — taking her very first hot class right here in this very space. From that first experience, she was drawn to the balance of strength, mindfulness, and community that yoga offers.

In 2011, Abby completed her Barkin Hot Vinyasa Teacher Training in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, followed by an Advanced Vinyasa Training in Costa Rica in 2012. Her love for movement and wellness later inspired her to earn a Fitness Technician Certificate from CNM in 2015 and to continue her education in healthcare, becoming a Registered Nurse and earning her Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) in 2020.

Abby is currently enjoying time at home with her baby, born in July, and is deeply grateful to be returning to the studio as part of the teaching team. She looks forward to reconnecting with this amazing community and sharing the practice that has been such a meaningful part of her life.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays at noon we are continuing our study of the Hatha Yoga Pradīpikā. The second chapter is all about the practice of Pranayama. Why do we want to even bother learning it? As yogis, it’s another tool in the handbag to help us calm our minds. If we can control where the prana goes we can control the mind itself! That would be cool!

bhuvanajñānaṃ sūrye saṃyamāt || ys_3.26 ||

From meditation on the sun comes knowledge of the earth.

There is some dispute about this one. On one level the idea is presented here that literal understanding of the sun itself, brings you to understand all that the sun shines on. You can find a nice Carl Sagan video online about how ancient people correctly calculated the circumference of the earth by measuring the difference of the shadows cast in different places at the same time of day. There are also commentaries that say this verse is using secret language to refer to the subtle energetic body which is connects for the way we think, the way the world appears to us, and thus, the way the world IS, for each of us. Sun and Moon are an example of a classical dichotomy, a balance of opposites. We see the world in opposites. Up and down, left and right, outer and inner, subject and object, you and me. These ideas are not owned by the world. They are made by us. They are useful in so much as they serve us. But what about when we find ourselves serving them? Unaware of the abstract nature of this opposition we come to believers in our “selves” as real things, in the world and yet seperate from the world. Selves which can reap benefit at the cost of what seems to be opposed to it. This mistake lies at the heart of all greed and greed lies at the heart of all pain.
