Our office is sending a huge congratulations to our Health Professions Scholar and Public Ally, Samata. She graduated from UNM College of Nursing last week! ๐ŸŽ“

Samata has been an incredible part of our team, consistently going above and beyond. She took the lead on organizing years of historical data, making a massive, lasting impact on our work. We're thrilled that Samata will be continuing her work with us through Public Allies New Mexico through next spring as she prepares to take her NCLEX exam and starts her residency. We are so excited to see her step into her career as a nurse!

The UNM HSC Office for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion is committed to building a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment throughout New Mexico through capacity building, sustainable programs, collaborations, shared vision, and responsibility. ๐ŸŒŸ

On this Giving Tuesday, we are thankful for the many heartfelt connections and partnerships that have made our mission a reality. ๐Ÿ’

Our programs reach learners, teachers, health professionals, and community collaborators throughout the state. Through our health care pathway programs including Communities to Careers, ENLACE NM, and STEM-H, we are committed to growing New Mexicoโ€™s diverse health care workforce in partnership with communities across New Mexico. Other key initiatives, such as our Inclusive Excellence Council, encourage innovation and transformation in collaboration with local, state, and national entities to address key health, economic and educational inequities.

This work is possible because of you and the belief that together, we recognize, cultivate and promote all forms of diversity; we aim to understand and address the health needs of our communities; and we advance clinical, academic, and research excellence.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for considering us for a donation. You can find our other funds on our Giving webpage at https://hsc.unm.edu/diversity/alumni-giving/.

Hosted by the UNM HSC Health Sciences Library & Informatics Center (HSLIC), join Professor Deleso A. Alford, J.D., LL.M, Humanity Matters Visiting Professor at the UNM HSC Office for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion for her presentation titled Exploring Cultural Humility through the Lens of Mrs. Henrietta Lacks and Her HeLa Cells: Humanity Matters.

This training is eligible for CME credit!

Thursday, November 20, 2025 โ€“ 1:00PM
Hybrid Event
In-Person: Domenici Center North Wing (DCNW) Room 2720
Zoom: https://zoom.us/j/93405042865; Password: JEI

This transformative training module invites participants to engage deeply with the lived experiences of Mrs. Henrietta Lacks โ€“ an African American woman whose cells, taken without permission or consent in 1951, became the first immortal human cell line and laid the foundation for countless scientific breakthroughs. Through the lens of cultural humility, participants will examine how Mrs. Lack's lived experience and her treatment intersected, and how the immortalization of her legacy continues to shape healthcare and research today.

Grounded in Professor Alford's seminal legal scholarship and bioethical inquiry, this session will challenge learners to:
โ€ข Define and apply Cultural Humility in clinical and institutional settings.
โ€ข Reflect on the humanity and dignity of Mrs. Lacks, whose story exemplifies the need for
ethical accountability and respectful communication in healthcare and research.
โ€ข Discuss the narrative of HeLa cells as a case study in professionalism, informed consent,
and unjust enrichment.

Our office acknowledges Dรญa de los Mu***os (Day of the Dead). This traditional holiday serves as a day of remembrance for ancestors and deceased loved ones, with observations including the construction of an "ofrenda" adorned with offerings for the deceased including their favorite foods, drinks, and items.

Through this week, we have set up an ofrenda in our office, and anyone is welcome to bring photos and/or items to honor your loved ones.

Come visit our office to receive a Halloween goodie bag! ๐ŸŽƒ And if you didn't know, we have coffee, tea, and snacks year round to support and uplift everyone at UNM Health Sciences!
