Just over 10 years ago, a group of residents led by Drs. Brenda Dintiman and Bruce Fuller came together to honor the first chair of the Department of Dermatology at the UNM School of Medicine, Dr. Walter Burgdorf, by creating an annual visiting lectureship in his name with the goal of bringing leading speakers and education to the current residents and the community.

was privileged to join UNM HSC's 10th Annual Health Professions Symposium this past weekend! Our team: Kenda Pina (Research Coordinator), Dr Surya Veerabagu (PGY-3), Dr Aimee Smidt (Chair & Professor), Bryce Roberts & Yeojin Park (UNM SOM students) conducted a Dermatology Bioskills Workshop including hands-on tutorials on punch biopsies and suturing, with general information for aspiring learners from all over New Mexico about our paths to Dermatology and why what we do has so much value in our community. This was SUCH an amazing event to connect with individuals interested in pursuing a career in healthcare - and kudos to the organizing team for the turnout and excellent programming!

PGY3 Resident, Dr Surya Veerabagu, worked with our UNM HSC DEI program to conduct a punch biopsy and suture workshop for the Mora High School Dream Makers. Dream Makers helps teens gain exposure to a variety of health professions through the lens of cultural awareness, while building science, match, and leadership skills that will help them graduate and go to college. These programs are designed for middle and high school students, particularly first-generation college attendees, from a disadvantaged area or identify as a demographic that is underrepresented in medicine and are pivotal to addressing healthcare worker shortages in New Mexico.
