New Mexico Pharmacists Association

New Mexico Pharmacists Association NMPhA is committed to serving pharmacists and patients in the state of New Mexico. The majority of members are registered pharmacists, licensed in New Mexico.

NMPhA is a non-profit association representing professionals from all pharmacy practice settings. Member pharmacists work in all settings: retail pharmacies (both independent and chain), homecare, hospitals, long term care facilities, nuclear pharmacies, mail order pharmacies, and research. NMPhA also include members representing pharmaceutical manufacturers, academia and a variety of government agencies. Our newest members are pharmacy technicians. The New Mexico Pharmaceutical Care Foundation (NMPCF) is a nonprofit charitable organization (501c3) which was formed in 2002. The Pharmaceutical Care Foundation concerns itself with pharmacy related patient and provider education activities. Foundation participants help provide patient medication reviews and medication related screenings at various events around New Mexico (Conference on Aging, NM Senior Olympics, State Fair, etc.). NMPCF has a strong relationship with the University of New Mexico College of Pharmacy and supports the students with a no interest student loan fund and financial support for other activities. Our experienced staff is knowledgeable about association management and issues which affect the profession. Responsiveness to member needs is their primary concern. Our staff participates in recognized state and national associations which are relevant to our interests.

This year’s recipient of the Legacy Award at the Association Excellence Awards is Dale Tinker, Executive Director of the New Mexico Pharmacists Association.

Following college Dale went to work for the Albuquerque Home Builders Association as their Apprenticeship Program Director. As fate would have it, the association executive soon retired, and Dale became Executive Director in 1977.

Dale then became Executive Director of the Associated Builders and Contractors New Mexico for six years. He was even an early pioneer for association management companies in New Mexico—managing both ABC of NM and the New Mexico Pharmacists Association until the two associations became financially able to operate as independent organizations. That is when Dale began managing the New Mexico Pharmacists Association exclusively.

In 1993 Dale passed the first law in the United States which allowed pharmacists to be mid-level providers with prescribing authority. This has become a standard for other states.

Because of the clear shortage of providers around NM, Dale worked to pass legislation in 2001 to allow pharmacist prescribing protocols for individual practices.

Dale is proud of the NM Pharmacists Association for providing leadership at the national level for pharmacists providing patient care activities.

Dale believes the most important aspect of association management is to have good relationships with industry groups. He has worked to have excellent relationships with the NM Board of Pharmacy and the UNM College of Pharmacy.

Dale and the NM Pharmacists Association provided “association management” education opportunities for pharmacy students for more than 20 years and during that time the rotations saw approximately 20 students a year, sometimes 3 to 4 students on the four-week rotation at a time.

Many of the students Dale had as externs on rotation are now leaders in pharmacy in New Mexico, and even in leadership of some National Pharmacy Associations. Many have been national leaders through their student pharmacists’ associations.

Dale encourages member participation in associations and demonstrates this by his proud membership and involvement in the New Mexico Society of Association Executives, which he joined in 1976 and became Board President in 1995.

Dale is very proud of the leadership role New Mexico has taken for pharmacy nationwide.

For nearly a decade, one criminal mastermind victimized pharmacists and patients by selling them unsafe medication, sometimes random pills in bottles that should have been things like HIV medicine.

Now, this criminal who defrauded pharmacies for hundreds of millions of dollars is going to jail for fifteen years. And he is one of more than 150 defendants in an HIV medication trademark lawsuit that alleges black market versions of the drug made their way to patients.

Please share our social posts for our video about how counterfeit HIV medication made it into the hands of patients. You can share it with your followers on Linkedin, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok while logged into your organization's account. I must admit that we are truly impressed by these families that have put aside their grief at losing a child to a fake pill and are campaigning to kick drug dealers off of social media. Stop The VOID has released a report called Best Practices To Rid Social Media Of Drug Trafficking That offers solutions for protecting children from drug dealer who operate online.

I ask that you share our social media posts about this vital new report with your followers on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn while logged in as your organization. The sooner the report's conclusions are enacted, the more children's lives will be saved.
