🇺🇸 Thank you to all our veterans today! 🇺🇸
We honor the immense sacrifices made by our nation's soldiers and their families. They face unique stressors, such as combat exposure, multiple deployments, and the lingering effects of PTSD and traumatic brain injuries (TBIs). Veterans with PTSD or TBIs are particularly vulnerable to misusing alcohol, opioids, and other substances, which can increase the risk of mental health issues and interpersonal conflicts.

Veterans.org reports that substance abuse in veterans shows that among those who have SUDs, more than 80% (nearly 900,000) abuse alcohol, nearly 27% (about 300,000) abuse illegal drugs, and about 7% (almost 80,000) abuse both alcohol and illegal drugs.

If you are a veteran who is struggling with SUDs, we are here for you.
Contact us today to learn how we can help you get back on your best path forward.

🏠 National Homeless Awareness Month — Let’s Shine a Light on an Overlooked Crisis 🌟
Homelessness and substance use are often intertwined. According to research, 44% of people experiencing homelessness have a substance use disorder at some point in their lives. Many turn to drugs or alcohol to cope with the stress, trauma, and instability of living without a home.

On the flip side, addiction can contribute to losing housing—straining finances, relationships, and support systems.
Barriers like stigma, economic strain, access to healthcare insurance, lack of transportation, and absence of treatment services make recovery even harder for people who are unhoused.

At Turning Point Recovery Center, we see this every day. We believe that everyone deserves access to care, regardless of where they’re living. If you or someone you know is struggling with housing instability and substance use, we’re here to help.

🍂 ’Tis the season for Gratitude! 🍂
In recovery, gratitude is more than a feeling—it’s a powerful tool for healing. By focusing on what we’re thankful for, we shift from challenges to growth, resilience, and hope.

Here are a few ways to practice gratitude every day:
👂🏽 Listen with intention and express appreciation.
📖 Keep a gratitude journal to reflect on daily wins.
🧑🏽‍🎓 Learn from mistakes—they guide growth.
🫶🏽 Nurture supportive relationships.
🧘🏽‍♀️ Take mindful moments to appreciate small joys.

Gratitude helps us see how far we’ve come and reminds us that recovery is a journey worth celebrating. 💛

🥳 November is Native American Heritage Month 🥳
This month, we honor Native communities and raise awareness about the urgent need for equitable access to recovery care.

According to SAMHSA, 13% of Native Americans need substance use treatment—but only 3.5% receive it. Many face barriers like limited access to care, transportation challenges, lack of insurance, and a shortage of culturally appropriate treatment options.

Recovery is for everyone—and everyone deserves the same opportunity to heal. 🙏🏽

Substance use disorders (SUDs) don’t discriminate — they affect people from all walks of life, regardless of age, background, or circumstance. The good news? Prevention can stop problems before they start.
Research shows that effective prevention programs strengthen protective factors (like family support, healthy coping skills, and community connection) and reduce risk factors (like trauma, stress, and early exposure to drugs or alcohol). When families, schools, and communities work together, the impact can last a lifetime.

🥳 Prevention Works — Because It Strengthens What Protects Us 💪🏽

🔬 Research shows that drug and alcohol prevention works best when we strengthen protective factors and reduce risk factors — across every part of life.

🚩 Risk factors can increase the chance of substance use:
Mental health challenges, family conflict, poor school connection, and community norms that favor drug use.

🛡️ Protective factors help prevent it:
Supportive families, positive peer groups, strong coping skills, and safe, connected communities.

✨ What works:
+ Family-based programs like Strengthening Families Program (SFP)
+ School programs that teach social and coping skills
+ Community initiatives like Communities That Care (CTC)
+ Screening and brief interventions in healthcare settings
+ Policies that reduce substance availability and harm

✅ Key takeaway: Prevention saves lives and strengthens communities — and it’s never too early or too late to start.
